code 42 problem

hi!
my -89 L98 shows a code 42 that can't be erased (the promlem not found or solwed...)
It runs, but timing can't be as it's suposed to.
It makes a "ping'ing" sound just by flicking the trottle.
when checking the timimng at idle with "the cable" disconected, timing is right at the spot.
The problem came from nowere, after just standing still a cup of coffe (30-45 min) (key off)
anyone had this problem?

Re: code 42 problem

The code is indicating a problem with the Electronic Spark Control Module. Runs around $70 bucks. As for why it died, everything dies eventually. Yours just decided to give up the ghost while you were getting coffee.

No, that's the ignition control module. The Electronic Spark Control Module is next to the winshield wiper motor. The ESC uses the the signal from the Knock Sensor to retard timing.

i changed to a new "esc" it's still knocking = no better...
what if the Knock Sensor is bad, (it has seen a lot of heat due to the headders) vill that set the code42 and make it start ping/knock?

Re: code 42 problem

ESC is code 43, not 42.
Im having the same problem no, but it jumps back and forth.

I will be driving along no problem. Then out of no where, it will start to spit and spudder out. It will stall, come back alive, stall again. Sometimes it comes back to life and just shoots an engine code to where I just go to limp home mode. I turned it off, sat for 5 mins, started back up and no problem!
Never had this problem before, but before the SES light shot on right as I started the car, that was a code 43.

Im gunna replace the Ign control module, the one under the dizzy.

Here is a chart for the code 42. Should get you going in the right direction.

Re: code 42 problem

Interesting! I have a 305 TPI that I've been trying to get to run smoot with ALDL (ECM) pins A & B jumpered (Service Mode). My symptoms are exactly the same as you describe. it will run for a bit during acceleration, than BAM!, it will jerk and sputter. I have a new ignition module, I think I'll put it in. Have you also replaced the Pick-up Coil? My ignition module and pick-up coil are in the distributor. are yours?

Re: code 42 problem

Yes, I have the small cap HEI as should you. This distributor is actualy one I picked up from a friend, and sent it to the guy finishing my car.
I would replace the ignition modual and see what that does, sounds like you have the same problem as I did.

Re: code 42 problem

had a friend with this issue. We replaced the distributor because the wires on the inside of the distributor were corroded going to the ignition module. Fixed it right up and no problem since.
