Cam Walk on L98???
I just finished my Intake, Head, Cam swap on my car and started it up the other nite and have a terrible sound comin from behind my timing chain cover.... (it's reciprocating and you can feel it when you put your hand on the cover)
I bought a cam button but never put it in because the L98's have that cam retaining plate....
I'm thinking that my new timing chain set must be off somehow, (not staight???/ true) because as I see it the cam shouldn't be able to walk forward, due to the retaining plate. I'm really not sure how anything could be wrong behind the timing chain cover though, because it's pretty staight forward. Somethings rubbing....?
The chain is a double roller, and the timing chain cover is appropriate....
Any ideas????

Re: Cam Walk on L98???
I'm thinking the new double roller chain is self clearancing itself on your block, at the top, right above where the 3 plugs go. The double roller I installed on mine interfered, and I had to grind away for clearance.

I'm with you all, it is pretty common (40% of the time), new double roller setups on roller blocks need some molding behind the cam gear.

Re: Cam Walk on L98???
Thanks guys!!!! I was starting to think that I put this thing together wrong.... but couldn't wrap my head around it or figure out what that would've been.
There's not much to do wrong back there and IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME I've done a rebuild, but the timing chain hitting the block, now that's plausable...
The first time I changed the cam the whole engine came out cause the cover wouldn't go back in...
.... this time I should be able to lift the engine (I've got a hoist now) and drop the oil pan and make my life easier. Wish me luck!!!!
I just want this thing on the road
Oh by the way the cam is Lingenfelter's 211/219

I know this is a little late but you can trim the timing cover a bit and never have to drop the oil pan to remove it.

Re: Cam Walk on L98???
The Pans down somewhat but you've got me curious....
You mean shave the inside groove of the timing chain cover so that it's not held in by the oilpan? Nifty idea if that's what you mean.
I tore the oil pan gasket again the other nite, in the front driver corner as I tried to peel it away fromm the block..... Guess I'll glue the sh*t out of it!!!
I'm gonna try to put it back together tonite...... wish me luck
I swear this better be worth it!!!!

take the time, get a new gasket, and seal it up right. The design sucks ****, but works if put together correctly (no leaks). I've done the timing cover mod, but only on older motors with separate front and rear rubbers seals and cork pan gaskets. On the one piece deals, I've just dropped the pan and reused the gasket.
Good luck!!

Qeustion for the 40% comment before. Are any of you running Cloyes double roller setups? I'm just curious. I have a 4bolt single rear seal block and run the cloyes double roller timing chain and was curios. I haven't had any issues per say that would have me look in that area but wanted to ask.

Re: Cam Walk on L98???
I ran a cloyes double roller with a non-roller cam in a roller block.
I didn't pay attention, and 50K miles later when I changed the $20 chain, I noticed it had self clearanced on it's own. Cheap car, free engine, who cares.
I did pay attention when putting together the current engine in my Z28, and had to bag the motor and grind away to clearance the double roller chain.
In summary, pay attention and check out your clearances when you put it together, b/c it might not fit.

Yeah you can cut the upper corners where the front pan seal goes. Clean it all up with brakeclean after you put it back together and use rtv to seal it back up.

Re: Cam Walk on L98???
Well the deed is done!!!!!
The cover has been glued back in with "The Right Stuff". I honestly can't wait to pull the whole engine out again... It's been a 11 week project so far and I've done everything twice....... If it's a problem I'll change it when the little guy graduates to a 383
I had to lift the engine a little in the end, cause I couldn't get the cover in with the pan resting on the crossmember. Just putting all the nuts and bolts back in and should start it Sunday or Monday....
Hope nothing else goes wrong.
I liked the ideas by the way........& I believe that the timing chain and cover were both Comp Cams
