Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

stock heads? Are you willing to have some work done to the heads for abit more cam lift?

stock heads are generally only good to about .470 lift or so before you have problems. You can shim them up to handle .510 lift or so. I'd recommend it for some cams.

but for true stock heads with new valve springs, crane powermax 2032 cam is a nice cam. it works well with stock intake/heads.

if you have better intake (siamesed TPI/HSR/miniram/superram) and some port work done, you can go alittle more duration like a 218/224 or such.

Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

if i recall right, the 2032 cam is .452/.465 with 1.5 rockers, so no dont run 1.6's unless you plan on adding shims/offset valve locks to get your lift capacity up. 1.6 rockers will net .482/.496 so you will need to shim up the springs to allow that to happen. not a bad idea and not hard to do since you need to replace your springs anyway, just buy offset valve locks, +.050" offset is needed, then get .045 worth of shims since most shims only come in .015, .030, .060 increments. Get a pack of .015 and .030 to lift up the spring assembly. that will allow you to run darn near .520" lift but i'd keep it down to .500-.510 for clearance safety purposes

Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

It's my opinion that its not worth it to do the work to put a bigger cam in our cars if you're keeping the stock heads. For one, the valve springs on those heads are 20 years old and worn out. Also the valve guide seals will need to be replaced as well so you dont get the puff of smoke on startup. The valves themselves have probably seen better days, too, and arent making a good seal in the seats as well as they used to.
But if you're dead set on it, make sure you at least replace the valve springs and the valve stem seals. I recommend Manley 22410-16 springs and 23652-16 retainers, along with 13091-16 valve locks. That'll allow you to run up to .550" lift camshafts, so you could run the 2032 cam with 1.6 rockers. But you will also have to change to screw-in studs to run that much lift, Manley part# 42106-16. The valve stem seals you'll have to get elsewhere, Manley doesnt make them for the stock heads.
And since you have to remove the intake manifold to change the cam, you might as well replace it as well with a TPI intake manifold from Edelbrock. (they make all the TPI manifolds now and have the best price)

is there some type of formula you are using to determine the lift when you factor in rocker arm ratio's???

Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

Yes, take the stated lift with 1.5 rockers, and divide by 1.5. That will give you the lobe lift of the camshaft. Now multiply that number by 1.6 and that will give you the new lift with 1.6 rockers.

Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

Hey everyone I’m looking to do a cam in my l98, I understand that head work is good if I want more lift but I am ok with the stock head as is I’m looking to get this one (Comp Cam Nostalgia Plus Camshaft
Part Number 249-SK12-671-4) here are the specs

Lift: .468"/.462"
Duration: 276°/283°
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°
RPM Range: 1800-6200

I’m pretty sure this should work from the research I’ve done but I wanted to reach out to double check thanks in advance for any reply’s

Holy HELL no.

Freaking 229° @ .50" on a TPI? Might as well shoot your engine with a Barrett 50 cal.

Start a new thread. new car, new starting point, new thread.

Re: Best Cam for a 350 TPI

I ran a zz4 cam and springs in my otherwise bone stock L98 an was very happy with it. Had enough lope to know there was a cam in there, but not much. Little more lift than that cam you listed, but way...WAY less duration. You really need to read up and understand what a TPI engine wants.

I learned a TON from reading this book. The parts used are all pretty old and outdated, but the concepts are 100% spot on.
