Rear-main bearing

Okay well I am pretty sure my rear main bearing is going bad. I just want to know how hard it is to do? and do you have to pull the engine? also anything else I should check since it is going bad?

thanks

Re: Rear-main bearing

i dont think your gonna have to pull the engine but i know the transmission will have to come out along with the driveshaft so you can pull the flywheel/flexplate off and drop the crankshaft out after pulling the oil pan, also while doing this you may want to go ahead and replace the rear main seal it will save you quite a bit of trouble later especially if its the one piece style, i dont know how much clearance is between the steering and the oil pan on these cars but some you can pull the pan right out.

I'm just curious: Why do you think the rear main bearing is going?

Re: Rear-main bearing

It will be easier in the long run to pull the engine. There's really not enough room to pull the crank in the car. This is something that needs to be done carefully and kept clean.

but no I have some mechanical exp. and I was at a car meet the other night and asked some other opinions and they agreed with me on the bearing, plus it knocks harder in drive then in park, so once its puts a load on the engine the stress makes it knock harder which should be the main bearing(and its the rear main bearing cause it knocks in the rear not the front)

I agreed completely just wonder how it could be done, but I cant do it so its up to the mechanics

Now is a good time to consider another engine. New or a known good used one. Once you start paying the labor and machine shop costs, you're going to be in pretty deep anyway.

well the engine couldnt run better as it is, I just want to get it fixed before it wont run. I shouldnt go buy a new engine just because its a knock. its been doing just fine for 2kmi so I dont think I want to go that route. also its not a motor that comes with the car, mine is an 85 and the motor is an l98

Re: Rear-main bearing

I would ALMOST bet a penny that it is a cracked flexplate. From my experience with small block Chevys, rear main bearings just don't go bad before the front main.

The rear main gets oiled first while the front gets oiled last.

Drop the converter cover and take a close look at the flexplate. Often from one of the big round holes toward a converter bolt hole.

I've had cracked flex plates that sound just as you describe.

Rear main bearing going out, by itself, is somewhat rare. Rod bearing going bad is not as rare.

Hope everything works out for you.

Re: Rear-main bearing

either way the motor is garbage.
and I highly doubt it's the rear main.
but even if it is a rod bearing, replacing a bearing is a waste of time and motor.

start yanking.

Why would it be a waste to spend 50bucks and fix something then spend a couple grand and get a whole new engine? ether way, its worth the time if you dont have the few thousand to spend on everything else. and this will help me save money so I can get rid of this "garbage motor" as you say.
