SLP stop making cold air kits ?

No longer shown on their site. Jeg's and Summit no longer carry. Hawk's website shows them of course marked up to 300.00. Anyone else you guys know of might have a few left for the 88-89 TA ? Thx

Thats not much of a shock considering its 2009 now and the last TPI engine was sold in 1992.

Your going to have to check out ebay and classified adds. Its like anything else with our cars. Every year things get harder to find.

Yep, already doing the ebay thing. I had been holding back watching the price jump up and up because of oil prices I guess. Had hopes it would drop back down some and then they are gone. I may have to bite the bullet and buy from Hawk's. They must have some the last new ones.

i have kinda the same issue wondering why aftermarket companys still sell mods for top dollar after have the same casting since the 80s aka tpi runners
and base mainfolds you would think 1st 100 or so would have covered the cost and that prices whould have gone down massively but havent

Slp seems to stop makeing things at random intakes headers exhausts there not like other companys that keep making stuff forever they just stop after a few years

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

SLP seems to be only interested in late model stuff. I think the cold air package has been out of production and discontinued since 2000 or so. The price goes up on stuff no longer produced, because the company that has left over n.o.s. knows that it can't be replaced. Before I spent $300.00 for one, I think I would look long and hard at fabricating my own.

At the most it has been a few months since they stopped producing them. I have been monitoring the price. I don't know if you have ever seen one but they look factory. A Home Depot homemade one isn't an option to me. May work just as well but looks like crap. Thx for the idea, though.

I agree with you about the home depot air intakes. They just look like crap. Custom intakes are cool if you have the means to build something oem or professional looking.

I understood that they were originally developed at OEM for Firehawks, so they were required to be OEM quality. I was considering building my own until I saw the home-made ones, and they just look terrible for the most part, or if not are really expensive.

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

I wasn't thinking of a Home Depot pvc pos. I was thinking in terms of using mandrel bent tubing and welding something up like Dyno Don did with his intake, only he just opened up the stock Firebird intake to mandrel bent 3 1/2 inch tubing all the way from the air cleaner to the throttle body and relocated the air cleaner lower out of the engine bay for cold air.

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

I bought a nice CAI for my 1991 Formula off EBay for like $70. It looks sharp, if a little *****-ish with the polished tubing. Certainly won't pass for a factory piece, but works good and is inexpensive... Good luck!

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

I purchased my SLP in 2006 just after I bought my car. Honestly I dont think the air box would be hard to duplicate (maybe fiberglass or something) its fairly simple since stock intake tubes are used (although SLP's have air foils rivited inside them). And I agree, this is probably the only cold air I would run. The ebay and cheap kits just look horrible and suck hot engine bay air. I dropped .3 in the 1/4 after installing the SLP kit. To bad parts are dissappearing for our cars.

nope, just bolts to the inner fender. There is actually a hole that is fits.
It's the best set up.
I'm glad I have mine.

Where is your battery? Must be on the other side,... mine is on the passenger side. i wonder how hard it would be to move the battery to the other side so i could use one of these,...

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

firebirds have the battery on the drivers side.... it may not be an improvement to the camaros but the firebirds have horrible factory intakes...... i felt an increase with mine...

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

I was surprised to see that SLP has dropped out of making/selling parts for the Third Gens. Of course I had just purchased my first 1988 GTA a few weeks ago and was looking forward to using their parts. SLP put me on hold forever (I never did talk to them and I doubt they would have cared anyway) and they don't give you an email address to send inquiries to. I quickly saw that no one else offered a high quality cold air kit so I immediately sought out one of these for my car. Did find one available and bought it quickly. Good Luck to everyone looking for this item.

I have one as well, and it was an excellent investment. My battery was relocated to rear of the car.

Re: SLP stop making cold air kits ?

What about something like this,...
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...mairboxes.aspx

This seems like less truble than moving the battery to the trunk. I've seen somewhere on this forum someone made one of these out of fiberglass. I would also be abel to use this with the stock replacement k&ns i just got. any opinions on these?
