Grinder speed controller for grinding and porting?

I want to try my hand at porting my TPI manifold but cant find a controller for my grinder that will bring the speed down to 10,000 rpms. Anyone know where I could find one? I checked Eastwood and Harbor freight with no luck Thanks!

Air powered die grinder or Dremel? If it is an air powered die grinder, you can get a valve to restrict airflow into the die grinder to slow it down, but it will be a "guestimate" number art best. You can get them at any place that sells air tools. What you won't find is a controller that you can take a 40,000 rpm tool and "dial in" a 10,000rpm setting. As far as I know, if you want a tool that you can dial in the rpm by using some sort of setting, it must be electric, air tools don't dial in like that. There are too many variables involved.

if you are using electrical grinder, you need a dimmer
something similar to this http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...10000003+90047

Yes it is an electric 25,000 rpm die grinder. I plan to use a Dremel for final/delicate work but all my grinder tools say 10,000 rpm max. I bought the kit from Eastwood and the grinder from Ebay. 400zracer that looks like it should work! I'll ****** one up as I got a HD card for Christmas! Thanks all!

Re: Grinder speed controller for grinding and porting?

With electric you can control speed precisely if you can determine how fast it is running or what voltage to set for 10,000 rpm. Probably the best bet would be to install one of your high speed tools rated for the 40,000 rpm and use a digital strobe type tach. Just use a little dot of white typewriter correction fluid on the edge of the tool, and turn on the tool and adjust it with the controller. You dial in the speed you want on the tach, and then adjust the controller until the light on the tach freezes the spot in one place. Works just like a timing light.

I just bought the Harbor Freight unit. Have not used it yet but the price was around $20.

I think I paid about $20 for mine too. I used one of there die grinders also. Just don't have it set on the full setting when you have sanding/flapper wheel on it. I did that by accident things got interesting for a little while. I'm glad i was wearing my saftey glasses.
