Computer question

I have a 85 camaro, it came stock with a 305 TPI but swapped it to a 350TPI. The PO swapped the motors but I had it rebuilt about 1200miles ago. Now I took it to get emissions and it runs really rich(limit is 1.8 car read 3.4) now is there a possibility I need to do something with the computer? can the stock one run a 350? if so how can I check to see if it hasnt been done already. and even though it was disconnected from the car during the rebuild did I still need to get it wiped or just tuned?

thanks in advance

Re: Computer question

305's came stock with 19lb injectors.
350's came stock with 22lb injectors.

The ECM can feasibly accomodate a 10% differential in injector size without programming. Your best bet would be to put in 22lb injectors.
Another option is to put in 19lb injectors but it will run lean in the higher rpm's.

Re: Computer question

yeah eventually you need to have some way of getting a reading from your computer

if you have a laptop you could use a program like winaldl

or buy a scanner tool

or spend like an hour or two and I wopping 1 dollar for a bulb and get on with it

on the other hand if you have a ton of cash laying around and a needy mechanic

carry on

THe program needs windows. its basically a scanner program for your laptop computer instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a stand alone scanner.

Putting the bulb in for SES light would make it to where you dont need a scanner or anything fancy to get the codes. All you would need is a 2 cent paper clip, 5 minutes of your time, working SES light, and the chiltons manual or internet to look up the codes.

Google is your friend btw

Re: Computer question

You use it to ground out ports A and B on the aldl connector. It causes the SES light to blink the codes.

Re: Computer question

When the engine was swapped was the ecm changed? The 1985 ecm is the first tpi ecm and is the slowest. Also 1985 Third Gens were only available with the 305 not the 350. As was mentioned previously, 350's run 22lb injectors, 305's run 19 lb. If you have the stock ecm and it thinks you have 19lb injectors on a 305, you may run lean. If you have an ecm that thinks you have a 350 with 22 lb injectors, it should be about right. If the 350 was swapped in with the 22 lb injectors, but the ecm thinks it is still a 305 with 19 lb injectors, it will may run rich. The ecm cannot tell what size engine you have or what size injectors you have unless you have the chip cleaned and reburned with the correct information. Another possibility is that the ecm has been set up for the correct engine/injector combination and you have one or more leaking injectors causing the lean condition.
