start only with starter fluid

I did a search and there were alot of threads about this but not quiet the same so could find the answer that i was looking for. My car is a 89 formula 350, the car sat for about a year and i had to put a fuel pump in it. You can hear the fuel pump run but the car just turns over, i can spray starter fluid in it and it will start and run fine, but if you cut it off it will not start back up, you have to spray starter fluid in it again, i have not had the chance to check the fuel press but plan to do that tomorrow. just thought i would see if there is something else that i may need to check.

THE IGN MODULE TELLS THE COMPUTER WHEN TO FIRE THE SPARK PLUGS. WHEN HE PUTS FUEL IN IT RUNS, SO HOW IS THE IGN MODULE BAD. I DON'T THINK ITS THAT. WHAT I THINK IS YOU HAVE CLOGGED INJECTORS OR A SHORTED ONE THAT WILL KEEP THE INJECTOR DRIVER FROM WORKING. OHM CHECK THE INJECTORS AND SEE IF ANY ARE BELOW 10 OHMS. IF YOU FIND ONE UN HOOK THAT INJECTOR AND TRY TO START. IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE BAD ONES, GO GET SOME NEW ONES,

The ignition module also controls the distributor pulse which in turn tells the fuel injectors when to open and close, if the dist is not pulsing the fuel inj will not fire.
I may be using the wrong terminology, but I am speaking from expierience, when I did my engine swap I forgot to connect the four wire conn to the module it woul start with starting fluid, but not without it untill i found the loose connector.

Re: start only with starter fluid

i wen out tonight and checked the injectors, they all were at 16, so then i tried to start and i started up, i cut it off and tried again and it started up again. So i let it run and get warmed up and then tried it again and it would not start then. i tryied turning it over and seeing if it would start after oil press built up but never did start. then i put a test light on the injector and it is getting a pulse when trying to start.

Re: start only with starter fluid

If your injectors are pulsing and it still will not run, check your fuel pressure, it should be around 45 psi give or take.

Also check for any large vacuum leaks esp the hose from the pvc valve.

What kind of coupling did you use to attach the new fuel pump to the fuel line?

Re: start only with starter fluid

i forgot to post that I did check the fuel pressure yesterday and it stayed over 43 psi for over 20min, and was at 45 with the key on.
Im thinking that the injectors may just be dirty from sitting up for the time that it did, im going to try some cleaner and drive it around a little bit to see if it changes any.

Just to give a update, im thinking it was the injectors but not sure. I have been just driving it and running cleaner in every tank and now starting up fine.

Re: start only with starter fluid

When you ohmed the injectors, did you check them when they where cold. If you did, you need to check them when there hot also. It might ohm correct cold but when they are hot, they ohm bad.
