more problems with a 91....

well so far my GFs car has been running great up will the other day. I got a call at work asn she said her car wouldnt start...well it was 9 degrees that day so i thought it may have been water in the fuel....

When i got home...it still wouldnt start unless i held the gas pedal down...it started....smoked a lot then stopped but will not idle. It just dies, in order to start the car, you have to hold the gas down a little...and have to hold it to keep it running.

It does smoke now and it smells rich very rich....

Revs perfectly fine all the way to redline....no hesitation or anything. Just wont idle. Any ideas what would all of a sudden do this????

Oh yea by the way

No Codes.....

Thanks
Ed

Re: more problems with a 91....

Its TPI 350 swap......why would i be on the TPI section if i was carbed?

I'm going to do a complete tune-up today....Its needs it anyway. The Vacuume line going to the MAP is trashed, but looks like its been trashed for a long time....i'll replace that. Could an EGR valve cause this??? she was getting an egr light a few months back....

Car just seems like its running too rich....

Throttle Pos sensor? i hate just buying **** for the car when it may not be the problem....

Thanks guys
Ed

ok to update....
New MAP
New TPS
Cleaned EGR
New Plugs/Wires/Cap/Rotor

Still wont idle at all

I turned up the Idle screw and she idles, and runs fine......

Why would it all of a sudden just lose RPM.....???

I'm confused

Re: more problems with a 91....

I don't know that you are supposed to adjust the idle screw on speed density cars. My car just ended up exhibiting the same symptoms, it turned out to be a problem with the EVAP system, I disconnected the vacuum line from the charcoal canister, blew some air threw it, reconnected it and things have been fine now. Sometimes those things get clogged and cause these kind of symptoms. Does the car smell like gas, and can you hear the tank venting right near the driver side wheel well? If you do, then the problem is probably in the EVAP system.
I would unplug the IAC and adjust the idle to 450 rpm with the IAC unplugged after having made sure that everything else is working properly.

there is no idle screw, that screw is the stop for the plate on the TB. The iac IDLE AIR CONTROL thats mounted on the TB is probably the culprit. the pintle gets stuck. The IAC is a controlled vac leak. The plates are supposed to be shut. by opening the plates you are letting air into the engine.. taqke off the IAC and check it.. replace if nessasary.. you need it to work properly because it acts as a dashpot on decell
