Cam choice for my TPI??

Hey there everyone. Would like some of your thoughts here. I have a 1989 L98 in my Monte Carlo SS. I want the car to at least get into the 13's without to much work. Money is tight these days as I am sure you can all agree. So what cam do you suggest to help get me the most power without having to change everything else along with it. I will be gasket matching the intake complete to the Felpro 1205's, Car has a TH350 with a 2500 stall, and 3:73 gears LSD. I have also removed around 500 pounds from the car. So max lift lobe separation etc. I don't mind a lumpy cam either, I will just buy a vacuum reservoir for the brake booster.

Oh yeah I also have 24# injectors. And a "Jet" stage 2 chip

Hrmm, a proven cam is the LT4 hotcam.. But, Im not sure how'd that
match your current setup. Plus, that Jet chip has gotta go if your going
with a aggressive aftermarket cam. Your gunna wanna get the car dialed
in no matter what cam you throw in her.

Vacuum shouldnt be too much a problem so much as lobe separation
and lift (depending on heads) would be. You wanna keep the cam within
110-114* ls with a TPI car, and lift always depends on heads/valvetrain.

Id search, there has been alot of cams thrown out there in the past
that I cant recall off the top of my head. Ive never been good at
the cam game.. unfortunately.

EDIT: nevermind I see your sig, its a '89 L98 motor/ECM.

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

Yeah as of right now it has the stock Heads. I have Long tube headers with 3 inch exhaust. I planned on getting some Brodix Track one heads and a Super ram/Mini ram, but I just can't afford them this year. I just want to get her into the mid 13's as Rich Christensen will be at our Local drag strip this year doing a Canadian version of Pinks All Out called "Arm Drop Live" and cars have to be faster then 13.99 to enter.

On a side note, I have been told by many the stage 2 chip is perfect for aftermarket cams etc.

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

If you're gonna stick with stock heads you're kinda limited....if you're gonna stick with stock heads and not get any work done on em then you are very limited.

Stock heads no work = crane 2032 will run on stock tune

Stock heads worked with screw in studs and guideplates = ZZ4 cam and runs great on stock tune.

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

Im not quite sure how close the Stage 2 Jet is to a stock tune, so I dont know
how it would react with the crane 2032 or the ZZ4, both good cam mentions.
If you look into these, Id replace the Jet with the stocker and run the 2032
or the ZZ4 off a GM tune until you/someone can take a closer look.

Tenpin is 100% right, to follow up... There is not any one tune that can
satisfy a build, common or not. The Jet chips are mass produced, not specifically
built for the engine your peicing together. If you wish you get every once of
power and the drivibility out of your engine, you have to let your ECM know
what has changed accurately! Not, inflated guesstimates and hotter timing
curves like a Jet chip provides..

I can bet Tenpin's 305 can run the required 13.99, and he's missen a few cubes!

In fact, I know he can.. I think?

You have to get the car on a computer monitor! No if, and's, or but's, about it!

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

I probably can come pretty close to 13's if I wanted to.
I ran a 14.6 With a consistent 2.1 60' times.
Fully dressed, street tires, stock stall, and with my sub box in the rear (for traction LOL!!)

I made 175 rwhp on a mustang dyno. The bottom half of my motor has 100,000 miles on it.
Not to shabby for a little guy.
My cars not a fast car, its a show car.
Any car can benifit from a nice tune. Specially when you start changing things like I did. My car ran like crap before the tune...really bad.

yes stock heads.
I just updated the springs, and while I was in there I also changed the valve seals.
Hell if I had free flowing heads, that would be nice!

With the chip the engine run well – you will hear the cam, it sounds cool but it idles ok and runs great. With additional tuning would it run better and faster, maybe but I am happy with it. Before I got the chip, it would not idle or run well at all, so the chip made a big difference.
Thanks

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

Ok well I am picking up a set of heads today actually GM 461 Camel backs with the 2.02/1.6. They have been rebuilt with screw in studs and guides, valves and upgraded springs. Everything has been done and they have around 1500 miles on them. The guy had them in his Malibu which was running high 12's.

So now what cam do you think will work well LOL!!

whats the max lift for those springs?

oh yea get rid of that Jet chip and either burn your own or dyno tune it. you'll get more out of your set up.

If I remember correctly they are good for .550 but I am going to have to check valve clearance anyway.

I am running the comp 08-300-8 in my car with the stoch computer and chip. The car runs and idle fine. I am planning a trip to Mongomery Motorsport Park tonight to see what times I can get before I do any mods to the chip and any more upgrades (throttle body, aftermarket runners, etc.) I got the cam from scoggins-dicky. Hi
For my setup - don't know and sorry to say don't care. The car is a garage queen - total mileage is 27K but for the last 4 years maybe 600 miles max on it. so the MPG isn't important to me.
thanks

Re: Cam choice for my TPI??

Went to the track tonight. I made the first pass and something tripped the timers and I didn't get a time. The second pass went 15.2 with a bad head wind and revving too high and timing way low. Went for third pass and it started raining. I will go back next friday. Have a few things to work on. Car run great but didn't have time to adjust anything. Everybody there said their cars were anywhere from 6 to 8 tenths slower tonight due to the conditions.
