Re: need help with a cam please

what heads are you running? the push rods and rokers should be fine. the springs are what u need to worry about. they will prolly be fine to.

there is no need for a high volume pump in a stock speced or even mild engine unless u have a high capacity oil pan. if you run the high vol pump on the stock pan, you run the risk of pumpin the pan dry.

Re: need help with a cam please

what happend to your lifters? rollers should last quite a while when the oil is changed properly.

any hydraulic roller cam with a powerband that doesnt go over 5500 would be my guess. the tpi falls on its face at rpms over 5800 iirc. they also dont like alot of duration, and can run worse then stock with the wrong choice of cam. i personally have never owned a tpi car, so will have to let someone else give u advice on cam selection. or u can just call comp and they will shoot straight with u.

good luck.

Re: need help with a cam please

its because my friends dad is a mechanic and he has rebuild chevy engines for 15years so he is showing me how to rebuild my engine only he tells me its better to change the lifters right now then once the engine is on the car also since i dont know if they have changed the oil in the engine properly because i bought it about two months ago

Re: need help with a cam please

ah i see, so has he inspected the lifters personally? kinda wierd he would rec new rollers as they reduce friction drasticlly and last a long time. but it wont hurt replacing them. im sure he has his reasons, but just remember, engine builers have high standards when there name is on the line.
i run a solid roller lifter, and have cracked a few before, but this is in an engine that lives around 7500rpms.

Re: need help with a cam please

first off (not to be a dik), use punctuation. its really hard to read what ur saying.

2. is this engine out of the car? do you have it torn down? if so grab a lifter, look at the main body and check for any cracks(wich i doubt u will have any), then check the roller tip, if it is siezed or extremely loose, u need new ones(along with a cam). if the engine is all sludged up i would soak the lifters in sovent for a night or two.

3.an average rebuild consist of pistons, rings, gaskets, bearings, oil pump, freeze plugs. but a new cam and lifters is not a bad idea.

this mickey mouse shlt he is talking about would be just a reseal.

if you are rebuilding this engine the right way, i need to know what year this engine/car is, what your hp goals are, is this a daily driver, any strip use, and what is your budget? i cant really help you with out more info.

btw, are u doubting ur buddys dad?

Re: need help with a cam please

Yes the engine is out of the car and tore down(only have put the the crank and the pistons in it), the engine is from a 89 iroc z and it is going to be my daily driver, and i checked the lifters and two of them are loose so, i just ordered all the lifters. And i dont have a budget because i only work when their is work since i do deliverys for my parents(We have a party supply store), and no i dont have any doubt about my buddies dad because his sons have 4 K5 and have built 454 in them and go off roading

Re: need help with a cam please

sounds good, you say you already replaced the pistons?
a decent cam for your setup would be a 2032 i believe. from crane cams. or a comp that is similar. other then that i think u have it handled

I'd keep the TPI if I were you, unless your in a pinch for money.

And no you will not have to replace your roller lifters.
I sure didn't mine were fine. I spent $230.00 on a roller cam and replaced the springs on the heads. And I was good to go.

$230.00 was the cam alone.
