HUH?

So i tryed adjusting the minimum air today. put paper clip in for 30 seconds, disconnected iac and spark advance. Connected a scanner to see the rpm, and it showed the iac at 0, but with the throttle/air adjusting screw turned all the way back w/o even touching the throttle the lowest idle i could get was 1200 rpm
I set the timing yesterday and it was advanced 10 degrees so i put it down to 6 degrees thinking that would be why the idle was too high, but it wasn't. It says to get the idle down to 450 rpm, is that correct?? maybe they meant 1450??

Re: HUH?

800-1200rpm is typical in P or neutral, 450rpm in gear is good for some builds.
I should mention that is where my car idles, not the specifications of idle speed.
The adjustment screw could be the rascal like 2.8 said! There is a sticker under
the hood of the factory LB9 settings.

Re: HUH?

After you install the IAC run the car to operating temperature. Once warm, shutoff the car, jumper A/B on the ALDL for field service mode. Turn the ignition on for 30 seconds to allow the IAC to reset. While the ignition is ON, disco the IAC. Pull jumpers, start motor. Adjust idle setscrew to 400 rpm for an auto, 450 for manual. Shutoff car, reconnect IAC. The ecm now has control over the idle again and will step the IAC to compensate. Personally, it never works for me and I just bump up the setscrew for 1k rpm in park, and 500-600 in drive. Depending on what all was done with your car before you probably wont reach manufacture recommended idle...

There's no reason (given every thing is in order) why you can get it down to 450, my 383 with a mild cam has no problem idling down to 450 using the procedure however, After I warm up the engine I disconnect the "Set Timing Connector" so the ECM can't change the timing which affects idle speed. This is the only step that is different from the manual and what has been posted.

Re: HUH?

Well i got the idle set correctly and it was way to low before.
It was tricky to get it to idle around 400 but i got it.
Now when its warm and i start it it almost stalls but catches itself? I think i will try replacing the cap and rotor and wires( i put new plugs in last year) and maybe the coil. What do you guys think?
