Head repl.

I've got an 88 camaro swaping the tbi setup and installing a too setup with a cam and new valve train setup to support the new cam but my question is can I still use my tbi heads with my tpi setup

Re: Head repl.

You can use any heads with it but it depends on how ideal it is do you know the casting number on the heads? theres tons of topics about how well the heads flow all over the boards but they will work as long as the tpi intake manifold is from 87 or later since the heads are from 88 because the center 4 bolts of the intake manifold got changed from 90 degrees to 72 degrees for 1987 and later, except corvette.

Re: Head repl.

Cool thanks, now if I port and polish the plenuim and runners, would that be a difference or not. A friend tells me that it's not worth it. True or false?

Re: Head repl.

No problem and it is worth it... It helps the engine breath a bit better its not gonna be anything super noticeable but it will pick up a bit of rpm range and its super easy to do yourself... anything free is worth it =P

and if you are willing to do the work you can port your manifold which is when you will notice it a bit more cuz even if you port the plenum and runners it will still bottleneck at the manifold...

and thats not even that hard but you have to take the manifold off to do it cuz you dont wanna get any manifold in the engine =P

Re: Head repl.

once again no problem and make sure when you are porting you dont shave off too much or the port would have been pointless make sure you use your gaskets to mark your edges =D

Have fun =P

It wouldnt make a dramatic difference, the TBI heads wont provide
a good complement to your port work. I personally would leave the
tuned port alone for now.

Gas mileage!

aWetastic is right in the idea of porting the plenum/runners
do help a long way, but only on cylinder heads that are already
starving to push more air...

Thats what I was wondering =P thats why I asked in my first post if he had casting number so he could search the forums on how well they flow... all I know is what ive done and I know LB9 heads have a good flow I dont know about the TBI heads =P

Re: Head repl.

I dont want to sound like porting would adversely effect the engine, TPI
needs all the help it can get. But, I wouldnt waste anymore time than I
have to with the car apart, for such a minimal payoff.

Get it built and enjoy it!

Not to bring back a beat topic, but i just want to make sure im reading this right. so i have an 86 TPI intake but the block and heads are from a 79 i can still use my existing heads? or do i have to modify them? i can look the casting numbers but i don't know them right of the bat.

Re: Head repl.

Im not 100% sure of myself but, the block will work without a doubt.
The heads will work, what are they 081? 416?

They only things that dont work are exhaust manifolds/oil pan.

I remember my 2nd engine I grenaded was a older late 70's block.
I used my 081 heads and the TPI on that with minimal issues!
