Distributor with Vortecs question

Does anyone know a part number for the small cap hei distributor that is needed when swapping to Vortec heads/manifold?

Thanks for your part number(s) and recommendation(s).

Re: Distributor with Vortecs question

Nothing special about the Vortec intake ;takes regular distributor
If you want a small cap version then just get one from a F body or TBI truck

MSD #8366 if you are feeling rich

Re: Distributor with Vortecs question

With the Stealth Ram, you have to get a small cap distributor and a remote mounted coil, so I've read. It also looks like the plugs on the smaller diameter distributor are different than the plugs on my current distributor. I wonder if the wires are the same colors on the new plugs. I could probably find the distributor, coil, and ignitioin plugs/wires for that distributor in a junk yard. I'm gonna look.

My first goal for today is to get the Hedman shorties I have on the hated 305. I just chopped the y-pipe and pulled the stock paperweights out of the engine bay. I finally found the ambition to do it. I didn't even have to jack up the car.

Re: Distributor with Vortecs question

Although I don't have any personal experience I did some research a while back and apparently the later, small cap modules have an additional ground lead. The attached may help some:

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks. I'll cross the bridge when I come to it and just figure it out as I go, most likely.

If you have a HEI dist and want to change to a small cap (which is what you should have said 1st up ) you can get a $15 adapter harness to connect your existing large harness plug and a plug with pigtail ($10) to hook up the remote coil from

I thought it was known that I needed to switch...I wasn't clear? I guess not. Sorry.

Thank you for that information. Very useful!

Re: Distributor with Vortecs question

I have everything you need for the swap if you are interested. I have a MSD small cap dizzy, remote GM blaster coil, and the harness $125.00 plus shipping. I had a vortec stealth ram, but have since sold it.

Let me know if you are interested

You're right. I forgot to mention that I am putting a Holley Stealth Ram on top of the heads, and that is why I need the small cap distributor.
