Re: RAM AIR INDUC. VS COLD AIR INTAKE

Any pics? Good idea using ac tubing. Hawks sells premade sheet metal version for $100. I know people have tried similar approach. Curious to see how you did it.

Did you cut off air baffles on lid? That by itself will allow lid to flow 50cfm or 10% more. I removed baffles on my stock 350 and felt a difference up top too. Haven't messed around with fog light ducts yet. What you are doing is making a cold air intake. From what I have read, ram air effect does not exist for cars. Car speeds would need to be very high for ram air or "supercharging" effect of intake to occur. You could rework air lid to make it taller. Would free up some more air by removing tight spot where it necks down.

Not sure if you saw these posts.

Ram Air Induction is always cold air.

But Cold Air Induction doesn't automatically = ram air.

Re: RAM AIR INDUC. VS COLD AIR INTAKE

Thanks for posting some pics. Good idea using ac duct tubes. I' thinking about modifying my lower base to accept round cone filters that would site down a bit in ducting. I've read that K&N filters support around 4-5hp per square in of filter area. From some rough calcs I think stock filters will support 240 hp. Not sure if this mod will made a big difference as people are making lots of power from stock filter setup. I have an extra lid so I figure might as well try it out. Air intake design almost seems to have been an afterthought by GM when you see how they pieced everything together.

Re: RAM AIR INDUC. VS COLD AIR INTAKE

I've been looking for something like this where I could still use the stock filter setup but I think I might try and use a scoop somewhere with it, do you think their will be any problems with rain getting forced through?

Re: RAM AIR INDUC. VS COLD AIR INTAKE

msl93, rain could be a concern in heavy storms. Even if filters got wet you could dry them out afterwords. KN& filters seem very sturdy, doubt water would get through. Every stock paper filter I've pulled on cars seems warped probably from rain.

The only ram air systems do a thing is a supercharger or turbo! The rest are gymics that do nothing!

Re: RAM AIR INDUC. VS COLD AIR INTAKE

Holy crappy grammar and spelling batman!

At the very least a "ram air" setup works as a good cold air setup.

The ram air effect is impossible to detect on a dyno obviously and the butt dyno often tells you what you want to hear but there are still reams and reams of data that show that a real ram air intake improves trap speed and ET, improves average speed on the oval and road course, makes a significant differance at Bonneville and golden state type events.

Data from the OE's and from racing teams show the effect to be real and significant also.

As a rule of thumb the effect is not noticable until about 60 mph, but that ofcourse depends on the system the car and several other variables.
