Test driving a L98 Camaro tomorrow, what to look for?

Wasn't sure where to post this exactly. Well I just sold my crappy Fox project car that I absolutely hated working on. I love working on my Grand Prix GTP so I figured I come back to the GM world. Tomorrow I'm looking at a nice 91' Camaro with a 350 in it and I was wondering if there are specific things to look for. It has the 700r4. It has a lot of things done to it including a recent rebuild. From the sound of it it was a well done rebuild with quality parts and the block was acid bathed before the build. The car is originally a 305 RS model.

Now I know the usual things to look for when buying a car, but I was really wondering if there are specific things on the 350/camaro in particular I need to check. Thanks for your thoughts!

EDIT: I just realized, I believe it is actually a Vortec engine that he put, from a 98 truck.

Welcome aboard. I don't know if there is anything too specific especially since owner did an engine swap. Just make sure interior is good, particularly the headliner and dash pad. Also that paint is in good shape. These seem to be common items that need work on our cars and adds up $$. Check for rust under rear wheel wells. Under driver floor area is a little hole where you can see floor pan. If there is significant rust here, be wary and check body over. Don't feel like you have to buy it. RS versions were very plentiful even if it has 350 swapped in. If car is in good shape for decent price and you like color, go for it. Keep us updated.

I would also check under the hood and dashboard (if possible) and look for hacked wiring.

I get the feeling that butchered wiring contributes to more and electrical issues than anything else that's posted on this Forum.

Aftermarket alarms also fall into this category.

Re: Test driving a L98 Camaro tomorrow, what to look for?

Thanks for the tips. He wants $2900 for it which I think is fair, given how much money in mods he has. They are all things I would want to do. The paint is nice, it was repainted about 5 years ago. It's red with sliver ground effect accents, also sliver around the headlights, very sharp. It does have a little damage on the fender but doesn't look bad, comes with a new fender too.

From what I recall, this is what he's done to it:

Rebuild about 3-4k ago,
Painted the block and intake to match the car,
Flowmaster 80
Mild cam (480,488 lift)
Pro Mag rockers
Edelbrock headers
3.73 gears and posi
New headliner

Says there's no rust other than where the damage on the fender is, we shall see tomorrow of course.

Nice Car!
I'm not a fan of the silver on the headlight ports, but that is simply a "taste" thing, nothing wrong with it.

Re: Test driving a L98 Camaro tomorrow, what to look for?

It reminds me of my 88 camaro SC I had a long time ago. It was orange with gray gfx. Not a fan of the silver headlight pockets either. Should of been painted black to go with the iroc hood. Would look so much better. Do you know what year the motor is? I see a MAF sensor. 91 would of been a speed density system with a MAP sensor. Still a good buy but I would of tried to get the price down to 2500. Welcome to the boards.

Re: Test driving a L98 Camaro tomorrow, what to look for?

Looks like a decent car...gotta agree with the other guys though, the silver headlight surrounds and pinstripes need to go. I'd black out the headlight surrounds as you'll never be able to match the red without spending a lot of $. If the pinstripes are vinyl, you should be able to carefully remove them with a heat gun or hair dryer. Just personal taste though, if you like it, then leave it as it is. I can deal with the silver ground efx, but only because I've seen so many 1982-87 Z28s with that color scheme from the factory before they stopped offering it.

Nice GTP. My dad's got an '02 40th with 9K on it that he bought new.
