I need help for mor hp!!!

I have a 1992 z28 Camaro with the tpi 305 in it. It has about 184000 on the engine. With out the obvious answer of replacing it with a 350. I want to keep it original for car shows. I bought it from a friend of mine when we put it on the dino a year ago it was around 190 I believe. I want to know what I can add for engine internals to get some more horsepower. Any help would be appreciated.I already have a performance cam shaft. I guess what Im looking for is someone to help me come up with a blue print for when I get back home to work on it.

Not sure if you have done full exhaust and headers but that will help a lot. Headers won't look stock but I would go for it since stockers are a big restriction.

Obvious things to make more power for 305 are porting manifold base and plenum. You can also buy aftermarket large tube runners that look like stock but are larger in diameter. You could have stock heads ported but once you start doing too much to heads, money adds up. It mike make sense to go aftermarket heads but choices are limited (World SR Torquer heads). Some people will say to turbo or supercharge 305 for making more power without completely modifying engine and to save some $$.

Stroker kit is neat but you are doing a lot of machine work to block which will add up $$ in addition to kit cost. At that point it would be easier and cheaper to drop in a 350. A 350 from the exterior will look the same as a 350. I have seen lots of 350's for sale on craigslist for a few hundred $$. You can keep 305 engine somewhere else in case you want to drop it back in.

I think it comes down to what you power goals are and how much money you have.

Re: I need help for mor hp!!!

look up a member on here named "Fast355". he had a 305 TPI engine in a van that put down something like 350 RWHP thats alot for a 305. i dont remember all of his build details but it involved vortec heads, a cam, and alot of tuning on his part from what i recall. You might not get the same results as him, so dont expect it to be a cookie cutter build and have all his same numbers. Lots of other members also have had great success building respectable 305's just SEARCH you will learn alot on this site!

Re: I need help for mor hp!!!

Thanks for the good input so far. I have a hard time getting all the exact specs seeing as I'm deployed right now. I found out that it has true dual cat back exhaust system. However he didnt do any thing with the headers. Like I said we dynoed it at 188hp. So I was thinking hooker headers and the kit jgilbo17 suggested should put me around 225hp. For around 1500. Also what should my comperssion ratio be? Im clueless here. As for labor costs what should I expect to pay? I would like to do it myself but just dont have the time.

To increase power and do this right you will HAVE to address two major issues. The first is the change or modification of the cylinder heads, which are extremely limiting on power for even a 305 in stock form. The second is the need to either find a good tuner in close proximity to your car, or learn the tuning process and buy the equipment yourself.

I would not suggest buying that stroker kit in the posted link, especially before you have contacted a local machine shop about building your project. You should first talk in depth with the machine shop that will be doing the work, before buying any parts. It is likely that the shop will suggest better parts that in turn would eliminate future problems, and cut costs on machining or assembly. For instance capscrew type connecting rods offer more internal clearance (less machining), and bushed rods will allow floating wrist-pins, and avoid piston damage from the install/removal process, while making assembly easier, and cheaper in some cases. You may also find that the shop could offer you an upgrade to a 350 block that would give you 383 cubic inches for only $200 more in cost. Either way, it is best to talk to the shop and get their recommendations on what parts to use.

Re: I need help for mor hp!!!

there isnt as much machining as you might think, its the same crank as they use for the 383 in the 350s, its a 3.75 stroke crank not a 4.00plus stroker crank where your filling the water jackets becaus the milling that is needed for the big cranks,

and i have flowtech headers and y pipe on my car
