stock tpi.. on 383 quick help

My 383 suposedly should make 500 horses at best, but i have a carb issue and i really need a bigger one. Im getting stumbling and gas going into the exhaust ect. Anyway i can either buy holley 750 or go back to fuel injection.

The car had a holley stealth ram on it before but the previous owner switched to a carb right before i got it. Im getting really sick of the carb and want to go back to what i know. A guy is willing to let a stock TPI system go for a good price. That includes rails, injectors, throttle body, both intake manfolds, all sensors, pcm, wiring harness, and distributor. I was told that the stock tpi will not work on my engine. That was from a friend anyway. Im not sure if he meant that it will just choke it, or it simply wont be compatable.

Here are my engine specs.
383 6.3 motor. 350 bored .040 over. 3.75” stroke crank. This motor features the following
PBM Aluminum Heads, 220cc runners 2.02 and 1.60 valves 58cc chambers
Comp camshaft 510/520 lift 230/236 Duration 112 LSA
Speed pro coated pistons
Eagle I beams
Procomp camshaft
MLS heads gaskets
PBM 1.6 Roller rockers
Weiand 7504 intake manifold
750 edelbrock carb

I dont have alot of money and really dont care about performance right now. I just want the car reliable and getting decent fuel economy until i get back on my feet. If anything, what will need to be modified to make it work? thanks

Re: stock tpi.. on 383 quick help

depending on what type of heads it comes with you may have to buy an aftermarket intake manifold, the other thing is if the TPI setup is speed, then you will have to get a custom chip, most likely though even if it's MAF, you'll probably be better off getting a custom tune.. so that does that... on the injectors side, you may have to buy different injectors... this though is all just my bucket of pennies... let's see if there's a moderator out there, they seem to know their shtuff...

Re: stock tpi.. on 383 quick help

i have seen alot of the holley stealth ram manfolds for under 300 bucks, but the complete package is over 3k! is there any reasonf or this? If i bought the stealth ram manifold, would the tpi sensors and distributor work? Then i could buy upgraded fuel rails and bigger injectors? Also the car has a pump that puts out over 50psi.. im having to use 2 regulators as it is to drop the psi down to 5 lol

A stock TPI will work but it will choke the engine.
Different injectors
A prom tune

As much as I dislike carbs, i'd say in your case to get a carb. It'll be cheaper and easier.

Re: stock tpi.. on 383 quick help

I've done a factory TPI set-up on a mild 383 in my 1990 Vette 'vert. Sure, it wasn't the fastest car, or making the most power, but it was a blast to drive. It would liquefy the tires at will, putting a smile into any situation.
For a street car, I wouldn't hesitate to put a stock, or ported TPI on a 383 just for the giggle-inducing fun of it. However, if you are headed to the track, I would look at a MiniRam or LT1 intake.

Re: stock tpi.. on 383 quick help

I know this is an old thread but Im thinking of getting a 383 and putting the stock TPI setup on it just for now so I can save up some money and get aftermarket intake later down the road. danziger on that Vette you didnt change the injectors or a prom tune?? Was it running lean at all with that stock setup??

Thanks, mxdirtking

Yep, I went with 30lb SVO injectors (which flow more than that with the higher fuel-pressure) and a PROM dyno-tune. Didn't run lean, but the cam made for a difficult mid-range tune...luckily have a great tuner locally.

I wouldn't hesitate to build another TPI 383 for a street car...stupid fun. I may do another one for my Formula.

Thanks! I found a vortec 383 that can out of a truck and I'm thinking of buying it but someone said that it wouldn't work but I should if I get a vortec intake manifold so I can run the tpi. I'm I missing something?

If you get the Vortec TPI base, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Make a separate post asking specific questions and use the search function. I think a Vortec-headed 383 with a big long-tube runner set-up would be insane fun on the street. You better put aside money for tires!
