How far can i go with the stock prom?
How far can i go with the stock prom?
i need some advice on this. i have a 91 gta. its a 305tpi 5-speed MAP sensed. i have deleted the smog pump completly, new belt and routing, blocked off egr, air foil, big cone filter, gonna be cutting off the cats, and got dual 3" out the back.
how far can i go untill the stock MAP prom needs to be reprogrammed? or would it be better to change the computer and put in a MAF set up? out of say an 88 formula. any advice or input is appreciated.

And for people that get bored with that, they switch to LT1 with both MAP and MAF. lol.
Going bigger whether injectors or cylinder volume or anything of that nature will always be better suited with a tune. Where you're at right now is probably the limit, of which i've read many times that a MAF computer system is much more forgiving of upgrades than a MAP system is, but if you've gone that far so far and no issues, then cutting the cats and changing exhuast isn't going to hurt much more. Get where you're going, and plan your next step accordingly. If you don't wanna tool around with multiple tunes, plan your next step, if you wanna go 350, if you wanna cam, ect. Then get a tune and enjoy your progress.

I'd ditch the cone filter & set up a CAI. Sucking in the hot underhood air isn't the way to make more horsepower.
Re: How far can i go with the stock prom?
i can get the MAF parts cheap. but say without my stock prom reprogramed and it still runs fine, i was wondering if the MAF will get more out of the mods? i dont want to do much with this engine i was looking into building twin turbo 350tpi. and buying the programing equipment then but maybe ill just jump into it now. any advice on info and or parts for programing?

Learn to tune on your stock engine & not use a custom built twin turbo to start learning tuning on. Or maybe you already know how to tune, but I'd think you wouldn't be asking for info on tuning parts.

Yea, definately learn how to tune your stock engine, or turn around and have someone tune your new engine plans and learn from there with that base starting point. Just up and learning how to do tuning is not for something to learn over the weekend. I have a reprogramable pcm on my LT1 and that is still a guess and test method to find the best possible setup to maximize your setup.
