Ive got a clip of an IROC. I think this person is on 3rd gen.
Part I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Ps7...eature=related
Part II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIb-8...eature=related
Whose done this?
As I understand you have to have a tune after installation.
Whats the turnkey cost to do this?
Im interested in doing it not for the pwr but for the sound more than anything.
If I remember correct it has Flowmaster Cat Back with 80series muffler.
Ive got dibs on a 88 IROC MM5 ($600)
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...iroc-isnt.html
and I think Ill do this to it if I can confirm it is not to difficult and expensive to pull off also not problematic as a cruising car.

Sounds good.
So I guess this is old news huh?
I guess Im easy to please.
Well how expensive is this? Im finding a little written up about a portion of the Mods not necesarrily the entire setup. Looks like tunig could be a challenge. What was your experience?
Im more interested in crusing in a hot sounding car with crazy low end pull than anything else. Not interested in racing.

Lt4 Hot Cam - $200 used
Vette Heads - $200-400 used
1.6 Rockers $330 new
Valve Springs - $160 I think
Tuning $500
Timing Set - $30-100 depending on what brand and style you want
$200 for gaskets, oil, coolant, misc lubes and silicone, etc....
My setup cost me about $1500 since I converted from carb to TPI and used stock 87 TPI iron heads and bought the tuning hardware.
I also went with a 90-92 ECM so I could eliminate the MAF sensor and run the cool SLP Dual Cold Air Intake setup,.

How was this car to drive on the street. I see one guy on here (I think his car is the one in the vid) saying his car wanted to stall out when driving when he pressed his clutch in to stop at a light or something.
In your vid it didnt seem you had much trouble with your setup.

Im really tempted to do this. I dont have to rush to get it done but I love the results of this setup. Looks like you have a lot of experience at this and have tried other setups, what else may work to get me to this goal while being easier to put together?

Is there a great dissadvantage in not using the corvett heads?

Brisk was the one that made the videos. After reading his comments on his car I now know I dont want the setup he has/had with the Hotcam. I love the exhaust note but read his quote about what he is looking for. Thats exactly what I want. I will say I will want to do long cruises in mine. My local F Body Club does monthly outings where we will cruise may 200 mi in a day so the car will need to do that without trouble.
What will it take to get this?

- Low end torque
- Nice Exhaust Note
- A tire smoker
- Maybe a stop light run once in a blue moon

Im not looking for a drag race car, or a daily driver. This car is a summer only weekend warrior that I use to cruise, go shopping, to the beach, and cruise the strip saturday nights.
I want a car that i can take out crusing, that has awesome low end torque so I can easily turn off tires, great acceleration and throttle response. I want a stop light to stop light car, something that revs up and down quickly. Something that will get up and freakin go off the line, or put on a good smoke show.
I after torque and bottom end, thats where all the fun! Yet I still want to be able to pull a quick quarter mile when needed (although this car will never see the track) And I'd like to run it on 87 octane pump gas if possible.
What I DON'T WANT is something that doesn't drive well or easily, something thats a no brainer to drive so my wife can enjoy it. I don't mind it having a lumpy idle, but I don't want to have to ride the clutch for a hundred feet to take off slowly or be on the gas all the time so the car isn't all jerky and rough to handle. Something that won't stall every time I push in the clutch or come to a stop.
The LT4 hotcam in my 305 was a demon to tune, but now its running very well with a smooth idle... but I desire more power, and a helluva lot more torque! The LT4 hotcam did alot to my little motor in a positive way, however it took away from low end torque.
This next motor, I'm building it specifically for torque!

If you want the low end torque, you will want a larger motor.
L98, 3200 stall, 3.73 gears.
Shorty headers, Borla cat back,

only video that you can really hear the exhaust under load,

I guess there is no way to have low end grunt without cubes is it? I really would like to retain the stock look in the engine bay while having monster torque. I can do that with a L98.
If there was anyway to do that with an LB9 I would since thats what came in the car.

Aftermarket TPI or lightly ported stock base with big tube runners, stock heads shaved down to 54 cc or so if possible and cleaned up, and the right cam should give a good boost in torque. Just gear it up with the 5 speed and it will have a peppy bottom end. The tune will make the difference. I dont see the corvette heads making much difference on a 305, but if you can get them, go for it. Worth the weight savings.
Shave the heads down since they probably should get a deck job anyway for flat surface. That will bump compression up half point or so. Something like a 212/218 cam on a 110 lsa or so would be driveable yet give abit of lope. Would make good power I think. Hotcam aint bad but its abit big for a TPI 305. HSR 305 it would be better suited but probably would feel abit soggy down low until you get into the mid 4000 rpm range.

I also went with a 90-92 ECM so I could eliminate the MAF sensor and run the cool SLP Dual Cold Air Intake setup,.

Orr that receipe you gave is for a LB9 correct? That would be nice if I could do this to a 305. I think you are saying to do all this to a 305. The reason Im asking is the other posters seem to think I must go L98 to get what my goal is.

Yeah, i think if you do some basic mods to that motor you will have a good running motor. LB9 with some bolt ons and a mild cam with good tuning will be peppy. Should easily run on par with a L98 type car.
Obviously a 350 is going to make abit more torque and power and be more fun to drive but thats a bit more expensive route to go. You can do a budget build on a 350 block and reuse your 305 heads or find L98 heads for cheap and have a decent L98 clone. All depends on how much money you want to spend and how much work you want to do.
Heads need machined to handle most modern cam grinds. YOu need screw in studs and valve guide bosses cut down for higher lift cams. If you tear down the 305 to the short block, you are close to just taking whole thing out for a 350. But you can stick with it, freshen up the heads for a mild cam and run that 305.
IF you put some gear in the rear end, torque output is multiplied, so you should feel some *****. My bolt on LS1 feels abit lazy down low with 2.73 gears.Once I put in 3200 stall it really allows me to get into the torque band and accelerates nicely. Once i get gears it will be a blast! My L98 woke up from 2.77's to 3.27's and then more so with 3.42s.
I think a 305 with some gear out back and bolt ons/mild cam should be peppy. Depending on where you buy your parts, you can end up having a decent running motor for fairly cheap. Then buy a bigger cube block and build it on the side while you enjoy the 305.
Your goals seem pretty vague. Low end torque yes, but how much? How to do classify enough? Dyno numbers or track numbers? How much more do you want over how the car currently feels?
To truely get massive torque out of it, forced induction is the only way. Nitrous if you dont mind the temporary effect from 3000 rpm on up. fab a set of manifolds for T3/T4 turbos about 50mm compressors, and tight A/R...it should come on fast and build massive torque in the 2800-3600 rpm range with TPI. Junkyard turbos and ebay intercooler can be done for probably same cost as cam/bolt ons or L98 swap

All the engine dyno graphs iv seen put the peak TQ at around 4500 to 5500 rpms on modded 305's and peak HP above a usable power range 6k+ its just do to the limited bore size.
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...cks/index.html
In this article the cam is similar and very close to the LT4 hot cam, the heads are also similar but flow better then stock 113 castings, i think that's a pretty good bench mark for a 305 build for a responsible price.

Thanks for gettin back to me. Ill have to think about that and give a more detailed answer. Until I collect my thoughts heres what I really want more than anything. I guess this IROC's character would be more superficial as I think about it. Here it is.
As far as money goes I need to think about that more too. The boss (my wife) is gonna give me the evil eye with this second toy. Especially since I have planned to make a run at expanding my business in a not so good economy. I am just unsure how much I want to invest in this ride. For starters Id say maybe around $1000 would be good.
Who knows I may just ride the LB9 stock for a while and build what I want little by little. The only reason Im hesistant in doing that was I got the car because its a 5 spd and to do what Brisk is doing in those videos all while trying to keep a stock appearance car. My GTA Vert will be the main cruiser hence the name Slowridr.
Bottom line is I've got some thinking to do.
Please chime in I value yalls opinion as that will help me formulate my goals.
Thanks for gettin back to me. Ill have to think about that and give a more detailed answer. Until I collect my thoughts heres what I really want more than anything. I guess this IROC's character would be more superficial as I think about it. Here it is.
- Ability to Smoke the Tires
- Pin my but to the seat torque
- Good Exhaust Sound
- Done by an LB9

yup, that is my car. knowing what I now know, I'd do it again although slightly differently. this car does have plenty of torque, it is just not off idle.

FWIW, my HSR L98 made 254whp and 315wtq thru an auto. The HSR 305 above made 195/273 a stick. Its a good ways off in power compared to a bolt on L98. I think a nicer cam would really help bring back some torque/hp. If you gained only 30hp from the cam, it would still make L98 like power and thats definately a mid high 13 second car in the right hands. Havent seen many people post about their 305 combos so I dont know what they will make with simple mods. I do know there are some experienced engine builders saying 400-425hp is doable on the 305 block so you can get a peppy street car out of it.

Hard to do it all for 1000 bucks so little by little may be the best way to go about it.
I know this is way off subject, nothing to do with 3rd gens at all but have yall ever heard of a show called "The Vampire Diaries", I was just on there set today. My kids and wife have heard of this show I have never. Is it any good? I guess they are riding off of the Twilight series fever thats sweeping the nation huh.

There's 305 engines pushing 450 - 500hp look no further then 305 sprint series. These guys are pretty limted too just read there engine rules and guide lines
I bet these engines will cost an arm and a leg wont they? These would not be TPI either.
This proves there is hope for the LB9 it just depends how deep ones pockets are.

With the specs they list those things must get the living **** revved out of them which is interesting considering a lot of people say that 305's cant rev. Is there anywhere that they have combos up for these at?
They use alcohol fuel which is another beast entirely (oxygenated) but at the same time the compression maximums are gasoline suitable with the right setup though.
If you look at the valvetrain it would be a solid flat cam, some roller rockers and the required durability mods (studs etc) but very basic stuff. The other interesting thing is it lists 2.02/1.60 valves as maximum size. I mean you could see some canted valved heads here but at the same time it seems to imply that it's possible to put these valves in a 305 with some work. Does anyone know if these guys have a magazine that lists combos? I would be very curious to see what they did.

The 305 should have some ability to make decent 450-500hp power and not necessarily limited to the bore size but rather the heads put on the car.
The GM 4.8L lsx (293 inch) and 5.3L motors (325 inch) make loads of power with heads/cams and they can get decent cams in there and not have PTV clearance problems or bore problems. These motors both have 3.78" bore, while the stroke varies from 3.268" for the 4.8 and 3.622" for the 5.3. They have 15 deg valve angle heads compared to 23 deg which helps air flow and might give them the ability to get more lift/duration on the cams without clearance problems.
I knew a kid at my track that had a 95 z28 with a 4.8L swapped in. Ran LS1 intake/heads I believe, or just the LS style intake, i am not sure. But with a decent 220's duration cam that thing ran low 12's at 112 mph I think it was. May have trapped 115 i just dont remember. Either way, it was pretty quick for a street n/a 293" motor.

Thats the thing, the technology isnt there for the 305 because other sbc's are available.
you want a bad *** 305? boost it or spray it
