knock sensor for 305/350 tpi

I know this topic has been discussed previously, but am wondering if GM has upgraded the knock sensor?

I have an 85 trans am, 305 tpi. Just dropped in a 350 tpi. Did some research, the advice is to replace the knock sensor with one for a 350. I went to the local GM dealer, the parts guy looked it up on the computer, compared the part numbers. He showed me the results. It is the same part number for both engines. I also checked another supplier, same story, same part number.

What gives? I simply cannot locate a different knock sensor for the 350. Am I missing something?

Re: knock sensor for 305/350 tpi

As far as I know there was no 5.7L TPI engine in 1985. Maybe this confused the parts guy you talked with.

I just checked 1992 Camaro Z28 with both 5.0L and 5.7L engines on rockauto and there are different ACDelco part numbers for knock sensors there.

they are defiantly different, if you run a 305 sensor in a 350 it will constantly be pulling timing out.

1985 Corvette had a 350 TPI motor.

Interestingly enough, advance auto and rock auto both show the same sensor being used in 1985 for the 350 and the 305, but different sensors being used in other years. Might have something to do with the 1985 ECM having a separate computer/module for the MAF.

We were talking about a 85 Trans Am, or not?

Found this thread about an 85 305/350 swap as it pertains to knock sensors. There might be an ESC module issue as well.

Yep, that's what I did essentially--dropped in a Corvette motor for that year. Corvette was the only car with a 350 TPI in 85. Reading the posts here, it looks like later on, GM went to a different KS. The ESC module is the same part number also.

yes, 85 Trans Am. 350 is a great swap, everything hooks up. The 305 in mine was a Chevy motor, not a Pontiac, and that may have made the swap easier. Although I also added a CAI to increase air flow.

Okay, but where do I find the right KS then? Every supplier I checked has the same part number for both.

Found this thread about an 85 305/350 swap as it pertains to knock sensors. Their might be an ESC module issue as well.
Thanks! That's a very helpful discussion. I havent run into an ECM problem so far, everything else seems to match up. Good thread to bookmark.
