Need base flowed-So Cal

Doing an accel base right now for a 396 sbc superram build.

Out of curiosity I want to see what this one is doing.

I know of a couple very competent machinist with benches but they are SO busy its not worth their time to do it.

Im about 20 min NW of Los Angeles, any takers on this one?

This wil be coming out of my own pocket, one of those guys that wants real info on whats doing what.

Should I be able to get this done I will definitely post up the results if anyones interested.

You have to have a fixture to mount it on, or flow it with a head.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

Don makes a good point and that reminds me of a story. We had a mildly worked over Accel TPI base that we took over to Dr Js to get flowed. It flowed around 290 cfm and then the conversation morphed into how much loss there would be if it was mounted to a head. We all had our estimates of the losses.

Well Dr J had one of his then new Profiler heads that flowed well into the 300s. We mounted the Accel base to the head and to all of our amazement it still flowed 290 cfm. It did not loose one cfm. The base was the restriction. Just something to remember if you use a head to check you manifold.

And thats why I'm hanging on to my Accel base, after Allen does his magic to it, it's gonna kick butt on the 408! ( If we don't blow the 408 up on the dyno this Saturday)

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

I dont have the fixture thats the problem, when you get someone on the phone and say TPI theres usually a groan at the other end of the phone lol.

Mounting it to a head with known #s would tell me what its doing....2nd one Ive done thats getting put on a 195 AFR head maybe Ill hit up Mr Mamo and see if hes interested in me bringing this one into his place. Id be curious to see whats doing what. post up on that 408 when you dyno it.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

Couple of thoughts on the using a head to mount it on.

1. If the heads is large enough such as a 220cc head it might show what the intake is actually flowing as the intake will be the restriction for sure.

2. If you use the AFR 195 head then you will know what will happen on your project with your intake.

Also Tony might give you some pointers on the intake manifold. He does pretty good with the after market stuff. If so take notes and PM me what he says.

If you are coming to the dyno session we can talk then. Heck bring along the intake and we can compare notes.

By the way we used to get than snickering until they see what it can flow. The LSX crowd still snickers.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

If I can get down there Ill bring it and some other goodies Ive been working on. I have a schedule from hell which makes it tough.

Ill hit up Tony and see if he can do it. I catch crap for grinding on TPI stuff and stock heads but sometimes I actually enjoy turd polishing.

"I have a schedule from hell which makes it tough."

Thats to bad as I would love to compare notes. I hope you can find a way to make it. We will probably start around 9:00am or so and run well into the afternoon.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

Man I totally forgot about this thread and the meet time would love to hang out compare notes and collaborate some. I work a graveyard shift with days off midweek so hard to get out....and I dont have an Fbody. One day...been awhile.

Also Tony might give you some pointers on the intake manifold. He does pretty good with the after market stuff. If so take notes and PM me what he says.
Oh I can already tell you what hes going to say....LOL

Were just going to use the 195 head as thats whats going on his motor and seems to be a popular combo. Im not expecting anything earth shattering...now if I had the bux for a sonic tester I could have some real fun with one and THEN hope for something real. All I can hope for honestly is it keeps up with them, well see. These bases were 240cfm out of the box no?
To pull another 40 is a LOT Im thinking this wont go there without going crazy and maybe welding some.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

Right, the Accel base flows around 245 or so out of the box. With some porting and no welding I had one with ports flowing between 270+ and 290 CFM. It needed a little more work to equalize the ports. With carefull porting you might be able to get one up to 300cfm without welding. Again out of the box the Accel TPI base is the best one out there.

I am currently working on one to work with a Felpro 1206 gasket and a 2.76"sq. CSA from one end to the other. This will require quite a bit of welding and machine shop time. I will have Dr. J do the honors of opening up the ports. I have already discussed the project with him.

Re: Need base flowed-So Cal

Love to see it when youre done. 1206 ismuch bigger than this one willbe

If youre ever out the S.F.V way look me up.

I would guess 270 would be hopefull in my case if not more but you know how those things go, sometimes the surprise is good, other times its back to the bench lol.
