adding second oil psi gauge questions

I have an 89 350 Vortec GMPP Crate Motor in my GTA and recently purchased an autometer oil psi gauge to install in my pillar cluster. However I want to keep my dash oil gauge functioning(as in acurate as it is) Where on a GEN 2 block is there an oil port I can use to install a second oil pressure sender. The back of the block under the distributor doesnt have a port. Any help greatly appreciated.

PS, not interested in a T fitting because of space issues.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

I checked again and there is a port under the distributor, however I have vortec heads and a scoggin dickey base plate and the way the intake is set up the intake runner hangs over the port making a direct install impossible. Any Suggestions?

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

It's either that port, or a tee in the one above the oil filter.

Any decent parts store will have brass pipe fittings, or a hardware store.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

Not sure about your application but on my 305 block there is a port at the front passenger side of the block just above the timing chain cover. It will have a pipe plug in it. The thread size is correct for an oil sending unit and I have read this is the most accurate location to install the sending because it the furthest point away from the pump.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

Ill have to look at my block, I have a GMPP 350 block, it should still be there unless its blocked by the compressor/smog pump bracket. Do you have any pics available of the port?

Thanks.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

Just ran out and snapped one for you.

Be aware, if you have the TPI cold start system you most likely will not be able to use this location because the big assed thermal time switch that sticks out the front of the manifold keeps the sending unit from getting the correct angle it needs to screw into the port. I discovered this a few days ago when I tried to install mine. In a few weeks when I swap in a ported manifold I'll be deleting the cold start system so no worries here.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

I have what you are trying to do and I put mine off the port on the back of the block by the distributor. You can get a tall L fitting and run your line from that. When you run your line be sure and get some rubber vacuum line and put over your copper or plastic oil line since it will eventuall rub a hole through it and cause a big mess. Also, be sure to use teflon tape or silicone on the fitting.

Re: adding second oil psi gauge questions

I finally got a chance to go out and look at my block, and it does not have that port in front of the engine, so I will be forced to go with a T fitting where the stock oil press sending unit is; on the drivers side above the oil filter. I cant use the port by the distributor because I have vortec heads and a scoggin dickey baseplate and it over hangs the port to far. Does anyone know the thread size to that port and possibly a good place to buy a decent T fitting?

Thanks!

PS sorry for the delayed response, got a kid on the way and its been distracting me from my first child lol
