91 305 TPI 5 speed stalls / dies at idle
1991 Camaro
305 5.0 Speed Manual
Having a problem with the car staying on at idle. It will stay on while cold but once it starts to reach operating temeperature it slightly surges at really low rpm and stalls. While in gear and throttled it it runs fine and the check engine light does not come on, every now and then when I let off the throttle at high speed it stalls. Only way to drive it is keeping it throttled at stops. When it dies I can start it right back up. I tried the IAC adjustment but when I go to turn on the car with the IAC unplugged the car will not start so I can not adjust "minimum air", maybe I am doing something wrong....
New ignition module
New Battery
Checked my IAC and it seems to be good (switched out with known working one and same problem so I guess mine is good)
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: 91 305 TPI 5 speed stalls / dies at idle
Update:
Swithed out sensors in hopes of finding the problem through process of elimination. Here are the sensors that were changed out with known working ones.
1: TPS (and adjusted)
2: AIC (and adjusted)
3: Ignition Module
4: Ignition Coil
5: Computer
6: Memcal
7: 02 Sensor
No fix, the problem still remained.
Drove the car and it died in front of my driveway on the way back home. Now it will not start at all. The motor turns over but it will not start, then I smell raw fuel in the tail pipes. There is fuel pressure because I smell it in the tail pipes and I hear the fuel pump work when I turn the ignition. However, there is no spark. I disconnected spark plug wire 1 at the spark plug, turned the motor and no spark. I then checked for spark at the ignition coil by unplugging it at the cap and turning the motor and no spark. Listed is what I did next;
1: Changed distributor (it was corroded to dust inside cap)
2: Checked all the fuses in the fuse box in the kick panel on driver's side (all ok)
3: Changed Ignition Coil once more with known working one (no luck)
I am stummped....I will keep looking and reading on the forum and will update as soon as something gives. I would also apreciate any ideas you guys might have. Thanks.

Re: 91 305 TPI 5 speed stalls / dies at idle
FIXED!!! Turns out the problem was a combination of things.
1) The distributor was bad, as I stated in the previous post, it was replaced.
2) I had not mentioned, in the original post, that the car has a MSD 6AL on it because I did not think of it as suspect of the initial symptoms (wrong!) anything can be culpret. However once there was no spark it became a possibility, in my mind, well...there was a short in the wiring harness that plugs the system in (MSD part#8876) to the car.
For now the MSD 6AL is disconnected and the car is running great, I will wire it up this weekend and if the actual 6AL component did not go shot by the short I will order a new harness (8876) and reconnect it.

Downshift, any updates on this? I am having a similar problem and I also believe it is a short in my Ignition wiring.

Re: 91 305 TPI 5 speed stalls / dies at idle
The MSD 6AL was bad and it has since been sent to MSD in El Paso to be repaired and I now have it back. The ignition coil went bad I have replaced it. I have been really busy with a new job and have not installed the 6AL but plan to do it soon. So in conclusion: My distributor was old and rusted out inside, and my 6AL shorted out.
Right now the car is running without the 6AL and it has not shut off on me.

I have a 91 5.0 TPI 5 speed with similar problems...
I have an EBL P4 Flash... and from the data it see's seems like the fuel injectors are bad... so I'm replacing those.... Seems to run great cold (open loop) but once warm, doesn't want to idle and dies after letting go of throttle (coming to a stop)...
Will know by the weekend how the fix went...

MSD are known for going out. That's why I don't have one anymore cause mine went out 3 years ago. Just run a hotter coil and you'll be fine. If I were you, I wouldn't connect it back up especially for a street car not making power over 6000.

Had a few things done...
New injectors (engine had 150k miles), new valve cover gaskets, new thermostat, new oil sending unit, replaced stock plenum with ported /polished...)
mechanic said bolts for runners / plenum were finger tight... vacuum leak...
Ran ok cold, but as warmed up and expanded, gaps got bigger and sucked air in where it was not supposed to... so check yours for that...

Re: 91 305 TPI 5 speed stalls / dies at idle
Hello guys. I have not driven the car in about 3 months (it is not my daily driver) and I have been super busy and have not had a chance to enjoy a ride. A couple of weeks ago I turned it on and let it idle to see it would shut off and it did not. It reached operating temperature, the fan kicked on and the car idled fine for the most part. There were some points where the idle got low but it did not die. I have not installed the MDS and might not do it after all. I have been told by many highly experienced 3rd geners that I should do without it, now Vincent being one of them. I don't get on the boards much now since I have been crazy busy with work and life but I hope that changes soon. I will update as soon as I take it our for a ride.
