Vapor Canister Details
Can someone please explain the function of that little black canister that has always been chilling in the corner of my engine bay that I have paid no attention to :P
Also, I am wanting to delete it so I can run a firebird CAI kit for MAF cars. What needs to be done to properly remove the vapor canister and what negative effects if any will it produce if done properly?

Re: Vapor Canister Details
The vapor canister has a charcoal filter at the bottom used to clean the vapors pulled from your tank. If you take it off you are gonna smell the fumes from the tank. You can delete but you will have to change your fuel lines and sending unit. If you just take it off and crimp the line you take the chance of vapor locking your fuel pump.

I went to Car Craft today and saw how the canister is supposed to be hooked up. No wonder why my car smells like fumes all the time.

I thought a vented gas cap would take care of the vapor buildup with no canister (?)

Re: Vapor Canister Details
JThe cap does release some pressure but not enough, too much and it wont pass emission test. There is actually a three part system for vapor release. Removing the canister will rarely cause vapor lock (it happens more often when that line is crimped), but you will notice a stronger petrol smell because the charcoal is not filtering it out. There is a vapor release valve that comes of the 4th line on the sending unit and if the diaphram stops working that will def. cause vapor lock.

Re: Vapor Canister Details
Since I can't find a vented locking gas cap for my car, I'm just going to toss the canister and place some sort of valve on the fuel line. But I need to know of a valve that will only open to release pressure once it starts building up. I don't want something that's vented 24/7 allowing my gas to evaporate.

When I bought my car it had a SLP cold air kit and no vapor canister to be found, someone even ran a dryer duct thru the fender out the bottom of the car trying to get more air
. I ended up selling the cold air kit because I want my car to be stock. Senior Member

Re: Vapor Canister Details
If you look at the rubber line going into the canister, you'll see a round plastic check valve. That will hold the vapors until it reaches a minimal pressure from the tank, and then expel them where the line is routed. Take it off and blow into the one end and you'll see.
I deleted my canister and routed rubber fuel line from the sending until back up into the filler neck area. It terminates right above the gas cap so you wouldn't smell anything.
FYI, you will never find a true vented gas cap. They simply are not made to fit our cars.
