Budget ?
I suspect if you are going for better heads then you could use more cam than a LT1 cam.
LT1 cam is 305 is a cheapy mod on stock 305 engine

I put an LT1 cam in an L69. Works pretty good with the 081 heads. They are hard to beat if you have to maintain emissions. Vortec heads are good, but the intake is expensive.

Honestly if you're going to pull off the heads you might as well put better ones on. The swirl port heads aren't "bad" when ported if you want a motor that doesn't pull past 4500-5000 rpm (with tpi you're kinda stuck there as well stock) They make great torque for the street but you'll run out of steam pretty quick. The v6 cars do come with 3.42's but in an open diff. Get an Eaton posi. it's good money spent IMHO.

ZZ4 heads don't necessarily "need" alot of work really. Just get them shaved down about .030 to get the combustion chamber down to about 55cc (anybody correct me if i'm wrong) so your compression stays about the same due to aluminum dissipating heat faster. I would also get the bowls cleaned up especially around the valve guide and do a good gasket matching of the ports. After that you should be golden with them on your 305.
