New guy swapping 350 TPI out of 92 into 98 s10

Hey guys, I bought a ragged out 92 camaro with a great running 5.7 and Auto trans. I have been building a bagged 98 s10 for the past year (bought a project that someone hacked up very badly), It had a 2.2 4cyl in it and I stripped it all out. I got the camaro and will be swapping EVERYTHING for the engine over to my s10. But my main question is, will I run into alot of problems swapping? Mainly will the engine run fine without the BCM from the camaro, and basically will I be able to run the ECU and engine as a stand alone setup without any problems? I have been searching for days, and this forum keeps popping up, I been reading and seems that all of you guys really know your stuff. Thanks for ANY and ALL info in advance. Also pics of said truck

The day I got it

your going to need the hareness from the camaro. As far as the motor goes, you would have to run a Vortec style distributor & ignition module as well as getting a vortec front cover with a crank sensor and a reluctor all of which can be had for around $200. With this you will be OBDII compliable, your factory gauges will work, and you can use the 350 TPI engine.good luck

Why?
92 '730 ECM is OBD1
Easiest way is a standalone engine only harness with the '92 ECM and leave truck wiring in place for gauges

Re: New guy swapping 350 TPI out of 92 into 98 s10

I should have mentioned, For gauges im running all LED ghost gauges for everything. to help make them more affordable I have been buying one a week for about a month now, still need a speedo and tach tho. So, I will be wiring all the gauges my self. I was hoping if I wired it all as a stand alone setup I wouldnt have too much trouble. I mean, problems are expected with anything custom as im sure you guys know already. When I was building my 572 daytona, the problems were everywhere. It took a long time to get all the bugs out. Im hoping to have my s10 running and driving around the end of march. Thanks for the info guys~

Standalone harness has only 3 wire hookup to truck.
12V , switched 12V (ign ) and fuel pump.
Everything else on the harness goes to a dedicated position on the engine or ECM.

Much easier than gutting out the original TPI harness to get the wires you only need

Harness prices vary
I have 2 of these in operation with MAP setups.

Has the wiring for speedo and convertor lockup ( that you need with 92 trans ) some other cheap harnesses don't have

Re: New guy swapping 350 TPI out of 92 into 98 s10

Thanks for that link! I needed that, Thats going to save me ALOT of time! Does the ebay wiring kit come with instructions or something to show where all the sensor plug ins go? If not I can figure it out. Also with mine being a 92 engine, if I send the ECM to be tuned, what codes will I need to get deleted, and Im guessing the VATS is one of those that has to be deleted out of the computer? I dont have to have namebrand parts to make my truck fast haha, Iv learnt the hard way that some of the best parts come from the most unexcpected places. ALSO was going to ask you guys what you think about TPI-specialties? They have a few things I looked into buying but not sure yet. Who else makes some good bang for the buck parts? Im looking to get the engine around/close to 400hp on a mostly stock bottom end (probably billet main caps,ARP bolts, and a good oil pump) What do you guys usually do with the heads? Go aluminum or do these stock ones respond well to being machined? not sure on what the stock valve size is, but was thinking about putting in some 2.02/1.60 valves, not sure on what springs, push rods and lifters yet tho. Probably just going to buy a street cam and lifter kit, and use stock springs. Any input is appreciated! Thanks again. and Happy Thanksgiving!

You lay the harness out on the engine and everything falls in place.
Nearly everything has a unique connector that only fits one particular sensor or in the case of the injectors; order is not relevant.

Your "730" ECM has the tune on a removable chip ( the memcal ) so you don't need to send the whole unit out like with later computers
Most common practice is to get a piggyback chip containing new tune from a online tuner like PCM for less or similar
http://www.pcmforless.com/index.php?...pper&Itemid=73

With a custom tune, you can change anything you like
Most common mods ;VATS delete ( won't start with VATS in place )
All pollution stuff ; AIR , EGR ,etc
Lower fan operating temps ; stock is north of 200F (Harness linked above has the wire for ECM control of relay for elec fan)
Rev /speed limiter
Mods for headers / freeflow exhaust

Re: New guy swapping 350 TPI out of 92 into 98 s10

Sorry for the late post. But the TPI350 camaro fell thru, I actually sold the car, and bought a 383 with some small goodies off craigslist, Got it home, tore it down only to find a busted piston. Guys phone is now cut off so Im stuff rebuilding it. The block, heads, and crank is all at the machine shop. i bought a comp cams thumper cam kit and a new set of TRW? pistons and rods off a buddy that never used them. This $600 "good running engine" has me at about $1100 right now
