TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

I have an 85 305 TPI (all stock) that I am replacing the fuel injectors on. I am staying with 19# injectors (Bosch II).

I want to rebuild the fuel pressure regulator while I have it apart as I suspect it is original as were the injectors.

My question is; is it worth putting an adjustable after market regulator on it with the 19# injectors? Or should I just rebuild the stock one with a new diaphragm?

What are the advantages to the aftermarket ones, if any (on a stock motor)??

Any suggestions/comments are always welcomed. The injectors are on the way and I hoping to make a decision on the regulator in the next couple of days.

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

No benefit whatsoever on a purely stock motor, however if you think you might do some upgrades in the future you might as well put one in while you have it all apart.

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

Has anyone used this as a stock replacement for the FPR??

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...P_P%7CGRP2030P_____

It's the same price as replacing the diaphragm but already one unit.

That looks just like stock. All that black part is ,is the cover. You don't need that. If anything goes wrong with them it is usually the material on the bottom of the diaphram that tears. Advance auto sells the diaphrams for about $48. You will also need to buy a special T-10 torx security bit to get the screws off. If you do decide to go that route, becareful with the screws ,they are hard to find.

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

I recomend a adj fuel psi reg on any motor. I run 48-52 psi on these motors, finer fuel droplets burn faster. A lot of people get excited about pumping fuel psi up like that, I don't. I run that in all my cars and it does pickup power.

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

I've thought about the adjustable option too. Can I increase the pressure with a stock 305 TPI running stock size 19# injectors?

Does it cause any issues on the stock fuel lines, rails, o-ring?

Have you checked the HP gains running the higher pressure?

What do you reccomend for a fuel gauge?

it may prove beneficial, its nice to have the adj. option too,but keep in mind most of the adj ones dont come with the diaphram, they are just a cover with a screw in the top.

The holley TPI adjustable fuel pressure reg. is the nicest one and does come with a new diaphram. I had the Crane one before and did not care for it.

Ordered the Holly today. Found it online through Advance Auto Parts with free shipping and $20 off if you spend $100 or more. The regulator was $99.99, so I added a 1.20 gasket, Lol. Bottom line I got it about $82.00!!

X2 on the Holley AFPR. Good buy on that. I like it because of the adjusting wheel- much easier to get to and adjust.

I second that. I run one too. Makes life much easier. Some of the others can possibly have problems with them hitting the bottom of the plenum.

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

OK, Got the injectors in, new Holley FPR in, all new gaskets too. Car started fine, but now I'm finding I can't get anymore than about 22 psi fuel pressure no matter how I adjust the regulator. As well, as soon as I shu the car down I loose all pressure. It starts and idles, but loss of power when I try to drive it.

I'm going to try the fuel filter, but I suspect the pump. I could understand the filter restricting pressure build up, but what explains the immediate loss of fuel pressure on shut down?? (the injectors are new and I see no signs of a fuel leak anywhere)

Can I be loosing the pressure in an intake gasket some how??

I'm puzzled, any help would be great!

Since the injectors are new and the regulator diaphragm is new . It would be looking at the pump and the pulsation dampener. If you drop the tank replace both or bypass the dampener with a rubber hose. It's fine to do that but you may get more of a whine sound through the line and into the car.

Yea, I'm thinking it's the pump too. Must be leaking back into the tank.

Any reccomendtions for a good pump for these TPI motors, other than stock?

Don't want to have drop the tank again in 5 years...

Other than the pain of having to drop the rear end and exhaust to get the tank out... Are these pumps hard to put in?

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

OK, think I just got dumb A$$ of the year award and it's only February!!

Whith the engine running, I was spraying some throttle body cleaner through a vacuum port, well it sucked the little red tube right off the can and into the intake!!

So I get to take the plunume and runners off this weekend and hope it didnt suck it all the way though the intake and into the heads....

you might be able too see it through the throttle body if your lucky and use a pair of plong claws. Its plastic it will melt.

Yea, I already looked trhough there... no luck, I think it got sucked righ into a runner and down to the intake. I'm afraid to even start the car now, thinking it will get sucked into the intake valve and screw something up.

Good idea though!

Re: TPI Fuel Pressure Regulator Question??

OK, what do you think. I took the plunume and runners off and still cant see the plastic spry can tube. It is my assumtion that it went all the way to the valves and/or into the combustion chamber...

Do you think its worth tearing down to find? Or do you think being plastic it will just chew and burn it up without any damage??

I'm so mad at myself, it was an idiot move

I think its long gone, probably got burned up, I bet it shriveled quick when the flame came. I wouldn't do a tear down not that big of a piece of plastic.
