89 IROC VATS PROBLEM

ok,I bought an 89 IROC at an auction...Cheap $500.. 305 5 speed..well i went to have a key made..no VATS code for a car older than 1991..i said ok ..how tough could it be to by pass it? ( Stop Laughing) problem was i had no resistor to go by..anyway LONG LONG story short..i pulled off the TPI setup and i want to replace it with intake and carb..no emissions were im at so i'm good to go. car already has headers on it..and i will remove the factory dual cats... question is..what intake do i use? ( has the Center bolt heads...Already foundout my performer intake wont work 2101)..and do i have to replace the distributor?

Re: 89 IROC VATS PROBLEM

getting around the VATS isn't too terribly hard to do.

https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system

https://www.thirdgen.org/vats

you'll need to find the VATS starter relay and bypass it.

you will need a distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance because the factory one is computer controlled.
it will need the correct gear for the camshaft. you may be able to pull the one off the stock distributor and use it.

you can hog out the 4 center intake bolt holes to use your old carb intake or
buy one for the later model heads.
the info for opening up the bolt holes is on this site and should turn up with
a search.

Make them look like the center bolt holes on the aftermarket intakes that fit both early and late style heads

Re: 89 IROC VATS PROBLEM

You could also get a chipped burned with the VATS turned off. Pretty simple fix.

No point with the carb conversion the OP is doing; he is no longer using the ECM

FYI
VATS delete on the chip only affects the computer ( fuel injectors );
you still have to manually bypass the starter relay when installing the chip
to completely remove VATS from car

Re: 89 IROC VATS PROBLEM

Another carb conversion..
Make sure you keep the TPI stuff to swap back on it when you get tired of dealing with that carb mess.
You do know carbs are bad for you, right?
The dealer got me my key and VATS code for my 89 Formula 350.

Re: 89 IROC VATS PROBLEM

I had good luck with the dual vats bypass module when I put a 92 harness in a 88 I had. They are easy to wire up then all u wld have to do is put a ignition switch n and not worry with it. I think I gave 40 bucks plus shipping.
