Re: Get more power out of my 305 tpi
Yes both of those will do something. That's the 1st thing I did with mine. Then I updated my rear end with a 3.73 gears and that helped big time.
Next was a cam and intake swap.
I'm pretty happy with how it runs...Until I can build a replacement lol!

1. Cat back exhaust $200 to $300
2. Headers $300 to $500
3. 3.73 gears $750 installed
4. Cam for a flat tappet motor like yours $100, install is a huge job.

Cam kit is no longer available but you can purchase just the cam for $50 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-1102/
A solid 40hp with the cam.

Dyno Don makes the best headers for thirdgens right now. But they are more expensive. If you cannot get those then try out the headmen headers.

Re: Get more power out of my 305 tpi
My advice is to buy only stainless steel exhaust, because anything else won't last.
I also suggest 1.75" primary shorty headers. It's not ideally sized for a 305, but are more valuable for re-sale or use on an upgraded engine in the future, thus you only buy them once.
There is a lot of power to be gained with a complete exhaust upgrade, but stainless isn't cheap, and working with exhaust isn't easy. It may take a couple of months to pay for the good stuff but will be worth it in performance and longevity.

All you need is Dyno Don's headers(he's on TGO in the SoCal board) and a Magnaflow cat back system. Do not change the gears because with a stock TPI it will be too much and you will lose top end and gas mileage. 3.23's are the best gears to have. Beside the engine doesn't breathe pass 4800rpm.

Ask anyone on this board with 3.73's and they will tell you there are no regrets with them.

I also run 3.73 gears in my 88 GTA. Zero regrets, it's the perfect gear!

I agree exhausts and headers do wounders. I was using a 305 for a bit and it would pull like a mother with just exhaust. My buddy said that it didn't pull that much when he had it in his stock 92

This is the site that I used to determine what gear I needed to correct the speedo. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...__va.htm#700r4

Re: Get more power out of my 305 tpi
I have an 85 iroc z28. I am wondering what i can do to get more low end torque and power out of it, while keeping my gas mileage within in the same area. It is completely stock. 305 v8 with tuned port injection. puts out about 200 ish horsepower. I am not sure how much because I have not taken it to a Dyno.
