Hey guys, here's my problem. I have an 89 GTA with a 350. When I got it out for the first time this year on Saturday after putting in a new battery it was running kind of rich and idling rough. As it warmed up it got better and I took it for a quick spin down the road and back. Tuesday night my wife decided to take it to her 2nd job I noticed it was back running rough and rich. She got a bout a half mile from home and it just shut off. I got there and could get it to fire and it would run rough for about 15-20 seconds and clear up completely for a second and just quit. Start it again having to hold my foot on the gas to get it to go and it does the same thing over and over. I've unplugged the MAF to see if that did it, nothing. I checked injectors, unplugged the fuel regulator vacuum line, checked to see if I had decent spark, unplugged a few other sensors and started it to see if it made any difference, and I pulled the cap and rotor off tonight to check the distributor and pickup coil and everything looked good. Last year I replaced the ICM and the fuel pump along with the fuel pump relay. It's just really strange its running so rich it makes your eyes water instantly then it's like it leans out for a split second before it shuts itself off. Any advice or thoughts?

Any help guys? I've searched the board the last two evenings but I'm still lost.
Bump! Please I'm desperate for some wisdom.

How's the o2 sensor? Also are you getting a check engine light?
Honestly I haven't checked o2 sensor. I really didn't know if that could cause such an extreme issue and a mechanic friend didn't think it could be that but willing to check it. Also no ses light until it dies and when I check it, no codes.
Ok, so I thought that beings I had just checked the injectors almost right before I put the car in storage last fall that there was no way that they were bad. I talked to my mechanic friend and he told me to try a jumper on the cts plugin, so I tried that tonight when I got home. The car fired up and idled much better, but still a little rich and I'm thinking I got it, then after about 45 seconds, boom it dies. So for giggles I check the injectors again. 5 of them all ohmed out at 17.1, 1 ohmed at 13.8, 1 at 8.8 and the last one I checked at 2.2. So I'm pretty much thinking that the injectors are done for. Question is, do I replace only the 3 bad ones or should I just do them all and be done with it? I'm thinking all but money is also a factor. I'm still a little confused though as the mechanic friend of mine said that when they go bad they just quit and shouldn't be causing a rich condition. Any thoughts. I'm hoping after this my problem will be completely solved and don't want a surprise when I'm done with injectors. Thanks.

Surprised no one else has chimed in on this. But I had the same issue, injector wise. Although mine sat for 8 years and all 8 injectors locked up. I threw in a set of Bosch IIIs and she fired right up. They only ran me $120 but you'll be better getting then from our sponsor here which is south bay fuel injectors. If your injectors are stock, it would be an arm and a leg replacing them seeing as they are nearly $100 a piece. Might as well upgrade once you're in there and they don't require anything special which is the good part. Better flow pattern as well.
As far as running rich, the computer could be throwing in extra gas since the others are slacking. Other than that you'd think it would be lean. But how you're running it now, it's definitely a problem with those injectors how they are. Of course no one can say if the engine will be dead on after replacing them, but certaintly fix that and who knows. It may come back to life and be much better at that.

Thanks for the advice hydrolic. I'm thinking I'll probably order a set from southbay and I'm sure it will have to run better than it did even if it doesn't fix it all. It always seemed to have a slight stumble before when you got on it, then it would go like hell. If anyone else has any thoughts on why it might be running rich feel free to chime in. My only thought is it cranks over awhile before it starts with the injector issues and it could be loading everything up and it doesn't really run long enough to burn it out.

sorry i didn't notice this post sooner, but hydrolic144 is correct, your injectors need to be replaced, however many people ask if they should just replace one or two injectors but our recommendation is to always replace the entire set. If one or two injectors are bad, the rest are sure to follow! Give us a call if we can help.Originally Posted by laidback_81
