89 firebird crank no start
89 firebird crank no start
ok so heres whats going on i have spent about a week just looking through post and see many related problems but still no solution so here it goes.
89 firebird formula 350 MPFI auto trans. I recently bought this car and the prior guy did a hack job to it so im trying to bring it back to life.
I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and relay as a first place to start cuz the pump was not priming when turning the key. still no prime but it will prime if I run a hot wire to the lower left corner of the ALDL (i believe G terminal) It also gets around 45psi to the fuel rail when trying to crank without manually priming it at the ALDL. I also replaced the fuel injectors thinking it was a good idea after the guy said he would pour gas and starter fluid in the intake but still nothing. It acted like it wanted to on the first crank then nothing. all the fueses are good even the one by the batery and I get spark. plugs are in right order and cap and rotar are clean. timing looks go when set to top dead center(term might be a little off). next to to try and figure out the vacuum mess going on. I think thats about it I picked up a OHM meter or volt meter to try and test out some wires but im still trying toteach my self how to use one. any one Got any ideas I missed? probable try a ECM when i get a chance to go to the junk yard, any way to test that? Oh yea no codes come up but I have not had it started since replacing the battery.

Re: 89 firebird crank no start
First and foremost chances are you have a bad fuel pump relay for the priming issue. then you need to make sure your spark is strong. if you have a weak spark it could cause a problem, so check the spark at the coil and then at the plugs, and go from there
Re: 89 firebird crank no start
sry i miss wrote that some how he would pour and spay it into the intake and it would idel but die when given gas. it seems to have stong park at the coil and seems a little week at the plugs. probable just going to repace all that for the hell of it.
the relay is new but ill pick up a different one today and try it, and hopfully figure out all these **** on the voltmeter so i know what these numbers mean
thanks for the help lets see what else we can find out today

Re: 89 firebird crank no start
I need to quite writing so early or late at night. He would spay fuel in the intake, didn't not mean some how I know how he did it obviously.
But on the other note was screwing around with the car a little today and got no where but i replaced the fuel relay again no go. and the wires seems like a little bigger spark but still nothing it hickuped once but then nothing. hooked up the fuel pressure test again just for kicks and I am not getting any pressure now. any more ideas before i decide to go carb

Re: 89 firebird crank no start
If the pump doesn't prime when key on, check the ignition module and pickup coil.
No ref pulse will cause the pump to not run.
There is a two second or so run time for each pulse.
If module is crap (or intermittant) that could cause your problem.
Wet and fouled plugs won't help either.
Get a module and/or a pickup coil, clean the plugs and try again.

Re: 89 firebird crank no start
before the engine even turns over to generate the dist ref pulse you mention
In any case his fuel pump should be running from the oil pressure switch any time the engine is cranking over,

12V applied to terminal G of the ALDL will make the pump run full time to confirm if pump is working and making pressure
Re: 89 firebird crank no start
installed the ICM and cleaned carbon off the IAC. the engine now turns over but will die right away unless giving it gas to about 2500 to 3000 RPM and getting code 34 MAF. could a MAF sensor cause the engine to do this or am i looking at a different problem at about 150 $ a piece i kind of want to double check or if their is a way to by pass it

Did you ever resolve your car problem? I think I have the same issue as your description and was wondering if you got your car working again.
