Hi, i know the stock timing is 6* btdc. I have never checked timing, and i have an overheating problem (checked/replaced all the usual suspects), so im going to check my timing.

Is there a better degree to time it to? I read somewhere on here that you can advance it a few degrees but im not sure to what point. (engine is fairly stock, just bolt on parts for now )

Will this help or hinder gas mileage?

My experience with near-stock TPIs is that you can bump it up about 4* over stock (10* BTDC, using factory base timing procedures) for a little boost in power with little or no downside.

Can't say it make the engine run and hotter or colder than before, but it certainly liked the extra advance. We're talking "playing in the margins" kinds of difference in terms of the load it puts on the cooling system here. If you're flat-out running hot a couple degrees one way or the other isn't going to make a "holy cow!" kinda difference.

Ok, cool. Thanks Damon. It sounds like you've done this a few times, what do you think i should set it at? Did you notice the best results at a certain degree?

on a stocker my car slowed down putting more timing in it going from time slip to time slip

Im not sure what your saying, it got slower? Do you have results showing that or you just think it did? Thats odd tho..

The post didnt make much sense thats why i asked, and that one still didnt answer my question. But its fine, ill just play with the timing and see how it goes.

General = GM. He's saying the factory pretty much got the advance as good as it gets. You're not going to pick up much trying to play with the timing on a stock engine.

maybe im crazy but i just added 2* over stock and i feel a difference... but my car is modded and again maybe im crazy...
