flat tappet in my roller motor

I'm only thinking of this because flat tappet kits are so cheap compared to hydro rollers. The only goal for this build is for sound. I just want the car to sound good for next summer while I build the new motor.

So. I've done a little research and it look like I need the cam, lifters, and longer push rods (.300). I think I may need a new timing cover?

What am I missing?

Thanks guys!

A flat tappet timing chain set ; the bolt pattern on the cams is different between the two
Use the same timing cover

Re: flat tappet in my roller motor

whats wrong with getting a new roller cam and using your old roller lifters? If you want new lifters get them at skip white.

By the time you buy all the parts needed for the " cheap" flat tappet swap you could buy a roller cam.
Just take your old cam out and put the new one in using all the parts (free ) you already have.

Used rollers always for sale on here cheap (< $200 ) and with a used roller cam you don't need new lifters

^

Lifters and a flat tappet cam will run you nearly as much as a new roller cam. Not to mention lost power going to flat tappet. Stay roller, all you need is a cam.

Another vote to stay roller. Look for a used cam on the cheap if your on a budget (and aren't we all, except the government).

Re: flat tappet in my roller motor

If I could get a roller from under 200 I would definitely do that. I though roller cams were in the 300 plus range

New they are but roller cams don't wear like flat tappet cams so most used ones are as good as new for half the price

Always for sale in the parts dept

Re: flat tappet in my roller motor

What sort of "sound" are you looking for from the motor? Like a specific tone, a lope at idle, loud?

The sort of sound every newbie on here "WANTS" so they can pretend they have a hot engine ;
a sound that only comes from a cam that doesn't well work with the stock computer tune.

Which is why their 2nd post is
" I put this lumpy cam in for the sound and now my car won't idle , runs like c*ap and has no fuel economy "

First, Im not some newbie when it comes to building motors, just a newbie when it comes to the sbc family. Second, I have no intention of pretending its fast. Third, Im just gathering info as I may not even do this.

Going from having a nice throaty sound to a completely stock iroc sucks. I can hear myself fart at WOT. I was just tossing around ideas while I build the lsx setup. The only thing Im going to buy for sure is a 3 inch catback set as that I can reuse with the lsx set up.

You stated in your 1st post "The only goal for this build is for sound".

You need to be aware that unlike a carb engine where you can throw almost any cam ( within reason ) in it
and it will run ,
with EFI once the cam specs vary too far from stock ( lumpy ) then you need a custom tune for the computer
If you are doing a future LSX swap I would leave the engine alone and just play with the exhaust ( no mufflers? )
to get the sound you desire

Im aware of that. The guy that tunes my ls stuff can tune the iroc. I would never change internals with out changing the tune.
