help choosing a cam

I was wondering if I could use the lt4 hotcam in my tpi setup. I know that the stock tpi heads are good to 480 lift and the cam is 492 lift. what can I do to the heads to make them work.

will the cam work with my computer with a custom tune on the e prom. the cam says that it is not computer compatable

Re: help choosing a cam

You have to change the valvetrain to accomodate higher lift. That being said, the .492 lift is with 1.5 rockers. I'd want a little more lift, a little less duration, BUT......it would work, mechanically speaking. And yes, with a tune, it would run fine, and sound pretty good.

....however, that cam with either 1.5 rockers OR the intended 1.6 rockers is too much for stock heads and stock TPI, even if a tune has it running properly.

Re: help choosing a cam

that is some bad sobering news because I found a lt4 cam for like $150.

is this a cam that would work better
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/lu...make/chevrolet

that cam is like twice as much but if it will work then its worth it

I ordered 22lb injectors but now I am thinking that it would have been better to go with 24lbs injectors and from southbay they are only around 5 bucks more what do you think

Just my opinion, but i would save for and invest in new heads, then get the cam to match your set up. That's better than throwing a few hundred here and there, then wanting better heads later. Then you can get bigger injectors and a custom tune. Just my

Re: help choosing a cam

yeah but I am using the stock tpi and if I put better heads on it it will need a better intake and then I am getting into all kinds of money.

I am gonna stick with the stock heads.

what kind of springs should I get to match the cam if I buy it

Re: help choosing a cam

I ran a zz4 cam with a stock tune ('89 MAF) with stock heads/LT4 spring, and stock TPI and loved it. enough cam for a seat of the pants difference, AND enough lope to just not quite sound stock. Cams are relatively cheap because guys opt for a slightly bigger cam when they buy zz4 crate motors. ....I ended up going with a custom tune, but it DID run very well on the stock tune. Ever so slightly within the parameters of the stock chip.

...however, I did have full headers/exhaust at the time. You'll want this too, in fact, I'd do this first.

Re: help choosing a cam

yeah I am definatly gonna get some headers and a y pipe that is in the budget.

I just found out that the previous owner put a 305 tpi set up in my gta and I am not happy. I have a roller 350 block that I was gonna save for another project but it looks like the gta is gonna used up my reserves of 350's.

I am gonna use the 305 heads and have 1.94 valves cut in. so with a bunch of porting work I will have a good flowing high compression motor.

I was thinking of going with a zz4 cam but I cant find one for sale right now. you know where i can find one

If you go 24lbs, you will need to reprogram your MemCal from 19 or 21 lb to 24. While your at it, might as well lower your coolant fan turn on to 192* turn on and 182* turn off and get a 180* thermostat.
