mysterious ticking sound

okay guys, ive been experiencing a weird ticking sound from my engine bay. its weird it seems to only come from the driver side of the bay and only does it when im driving i can put the car in park or nuetral and rev it and it wont do it. but when i put it in drive and drive off it starts ticking it follows my rpms and sounds like a card in the spokes of a bicycle its strange the motor is brand new and only has 3k miles on it so id hope it isnt anything in the motor. but you never know i was wondering if anyone could shed light on this. i also tightened my manifold bolts to see if that did it but it didnt help also have had the entire piping up to the manifolds checked for leaks and their wasnt any. hope someone can help

Re: mysterious ticking sound

I know you checked, but it still sounds like an exhaust leak. You can find a leak by black stains where it was leaking out, or if you are careful, you can find it with the engine running by very carefully moving your hand around the manifold and pipes until you feel the puffing.

i will have it checked again, what about the gasket between the manifold and motor. if its burnt out or going bad would it do this?

No gasket required between the manifolds and the heads.

Re: mysterious ticking sound

With the coolant fan turned off, you should be able to hold a bit of paper towel around the flanges of the manifold.

When the paper towel fluffs you've found your leak.

Re: mysterious ticking sound

if ticking increases in speed as you accelerate ,then it's prob an exhaust leak. More than likely at the manifold or header gasket.

Re: mysterious ticking sound

I will bring this up only because I've had it happen in the recent past: had the same issue that you're describing, no loss in power, motor only had approx 2500 miles on it and tapping only happened under load. After exhausting every thought I could have, I ended up pulling of the intake and found that a snapped intake pushrod was causing the noise. Hope this isn't your issue and that it's something small and stupid. But figured I'd let you know either way.

did the noise happen when you would rev the car in park or neutral??? or only while driving

Re: mysterious ticking sound

Awkwardly enough, it only occasionally did it under reving in park/neutral; typically did it while driving only.

Also another thing that threw me for a bit of a loop, (my noise that I was getting) it didn't do it in rhythm (like you would assume). The tapping kind of varied a bit during driving.
