TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

Hey guys I want to know if im going to make any improvement over my vortec scoggin TPI lower and stock runner going to a stealth ram intake. I have a 80s 010 350 block with vortec heads short tube headers and 3'' all the way back. Just installed 3.73 gears with 2200 stall converter and stage 2 transgo shift kit. I know that cam is going to play a big roll in my intake choice but i dont know what i currently have. But what i can tell you is im not making much power before 2700 and with my TPI i hit a wall hard at 4500 rpm. I mainly interested in running 1/4 mile and Sunday light to light playing. And just to add im in Denver a mile in the air. I was at the track and was out of steam well before the end my best time being 15.1 with 1.9 60' time. Any thoughts on the stealth ram or any ideas on helping improve my et time would be great!

Stealth ram will raise your powerband, and peak hp numbers, if you install a cam to match this change in powerband, yes you can see a great gain in peak and throughout the new rpm range.

Good deal i will match it with a cam. I was also wondering if the TPI nitrous plate will work with the stealth ram intake?

Any TB will fit ;
if you use a NOS plate you have to modify the cable bracket to get the right cable length to the linkage

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

Stealth should pull to 5100-5200 before really dropping off on a bolt on L98. Thats about 800 rpm more powerband than stock tpi.

Mile Hi times: IIRC I ran 14.7 at Bandimere in an 87 305TPI/T-5/3.42. Stock heads and cam. I don't remember if that time was before or after Edelbrock TES and SLP runners.

3.73 gears are way to much for a stock TPI or mildly built TPI. YOU NEED TO TURN 6000+ for 3.73's to really work for you. Stealthram will hurt you if you dont have a proper tune. You will lose bottom end torque off the line.

You can run into the 13's with a stock motor with just a full exhaust system and 3.23 gears. Put a good tune up on and set the base timing to 6*-8* and thats all you need to do.

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

You should improve greatly even on stock tune. Just set base to 8-10 deg and run premium gas.

My best stock tpi intake time was 13.63 at 97 in perfect air conditions. No other changes but stealth ram i went 13.46 on a warm day at 99-100. More tuning and optimal air, few other bolt ons i went 13.2's. drag wheels to save 70 lbs and 1.6 rockers i went 12.95 at 103.8

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

I went 3.73 gears with the idea of going with a taller tire here soon it was pretty clear after my first pass they were way too tall for 25'' tires and the TPI. Id like to match my intake with my gears instead of smaller gears will the hsr allow me to turn 5500+ with 062 vortec heads? About that base time... Can i bump it up without a custom tune? And any cam ideas would be great with the hsr?

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

I shifted at 5500 and it worked ok. 5300 may be better. You'll have to experiment. 3.73 are perfect for bolt on l98 with short runner intakes. You need it to get off the line best and get into the upper rpms.
Typical mild stock cam L98 is only a 100-104 mph car at best.
3.73 and 26" tire is only turning 4900-5000 rpm at the finish line. Factor in 6% converter slip and its 5200-5300. Right at peak power /shift point. This is optimal for 1/4 mile

Stock TPI ECM usually locks the converter at WOT, so there should be no slip above 65 mph or so.

I only had a stock LT4 cam in my Vortec head 350 stock runner TPI setup and was pushing 97-98 mph out of it in a fullsize G-van weighing in at 5,300 lbs. With siamesed SLP runners and ported plenum it would run 100-101 mph. Stock runners I shifted it 1-2 @ 5,800 and 2-3 @ 5,500. Had 29" tall tires, 3.08s and a 2,800 rpm converter at the time. Converter would force lock at 65 mph in 2nd gear and the 700r4 would shift 2-3 with a locked converter.

Stock runner/Stock Cam/Stock heads should be shifting ~5,100 rpm for best ET and trapping around the same RPM. That's about 10% over HP peak.

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

My tpi car was so down on power after 4700 it was ridiculous. I cant find that dyno chart but stealth ram pulled to 5000 flattening out to 5100-5200 and dropped fast after.

Good thing to note, dependin on your yr bin file, converter locks anywhere from 70's mph to high 80's. i custom burnt chips disabling that feature to leave it open, and i always ran faster converter open

I trapped 103mph in my bone stock 1990 G92 5.7 IROC with just 1 3/4in SLP headers, dual cats and 3in cat-back exhaust. Remember 90-92 5.7's G92 F-Bodies 245 hp. Bone stock they ran on a good day in the low 14 teens@ 97-98mph.

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

Depends on track location but yes a strong l98 should be high 90's. mine was 95-97 on 2.77 gears just exhaust mods. 3.42's it hit 98-100. With slicks it went back down 97. Stock tpi. Once intake is opened up you should see 2 mph average increase. May even be more

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

So im about to pull the gun on this stealth ram and cam. I called comp cam and they suggested this cam http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...x?csid=93&sb=2 .... is this what I need? Also going to have to have a custom tune any suggestions where i can get a chip flashed?

You dont have a L98 cam in that engine. Thats why it falls off so soon. The L98 cam will fall off after 4800.

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

Im not sure when I bought the car it was TBI with 062 vortec heads. I did the TPI conversion with larrys electric ECM and harness. Its a 010 block and i dont know compression ratio. Other than cam and bottom end i can tell you everything lol just rebuilt the transmission myself last week. Just trying to give as much info as i can.

You can use the same dist. You can get an aftermarket hydraulic roller retrofit cam or just use a flat tappet cam. Keep the lift under .470 and the duration around 210-225 with 112-114LSA for the street and gas mileage.

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

So I went with the HSR and the improvement was amazing it now pulls hard to about 5200 RPM with the same cam and same tune and running a bit rich. Going with the Dynamic EFI computer and pretty big cam next. Thanks for the advice guys much help!

Re: TPI 4500rpm wall will stealthram help?

I didn't mainly because i know im going back inside it soon to install this cam i have sitting on the table. I'm also going to the track this week to see what improvement i get on a bone stock HSR on vortec heads with no tune. everyone seems worried about loss of torque on the low end but its night and day and pulls just as hard in low RPM but maybes its the tall gears making up for that loss?
