Ive searched the forum for suggestions on a new MAF unit and mostly everyone was leaning towards micro-tech and wells (Su-145). But since i cant find a micro-tech and they stopped making wells has anyone tried richporter (64-1523) from carquest? Ive also came across that rock auto is advertising airtex/wells relays so are they the same company? If so ive come across a airtex MAF (5S2640) thats on sale on E-bay. Ive been through 2 bosch sensors, and they dont seem to work. Checked relays and they are ok.

 

+1 on the rich porter. just make sure its a NEW one. I feel I am more than qualified to speak on the subject of MAFS. #1 never ever ever buy anything made by wells, airtex, and certainly NOT cardone! I got my NEW rich porter MAF from oreilleys. it is the single best thing I have done to improve the drivability of my 305 TPI car.#2 the relays for the MAF are NOT the same. to be sure you get the correct ones, call your local chevy dealer .and get the part numbers. these 2 things make all the difference between you driving and smiling .OR you stay pissed that you cant get it to run. bottom line. do your homework. buy the right parts. and good luck. post up how you did, when you get it fixed.

yup, I have found NOS ones for $1500 !! mine cost $450. and truly I would have payed more just to be done with all the BS that a bad MAF brings. additionally the 89 design is different. but it will work on 86-89 cars . a big improvement IMHO. now as far as I can tell the 85 MAF is particular to that year. those guys are SOL.

 

I ordered the rich porter MAF and AC Delco relays today (MAF Power - GM 10067925) (MAF Burn Off GM 10094701) hopefully that will fix the issue, i also been seeing abnormal voltage drops on the battery gauge after the car throws the code. Does anyone car does this? I recently upgraded the battery cables, but personally I think i need more ground. Ill let you guys know how it went after I receive and install the parts. Thanks for your help

also on a side, i have found some info on relays and part numbers, for some cars the maf burn off and maf power relays were the same GM part, as my 88 GTA has same, number 14089936, design 2

according to GM ,the MAF power and burn off relays are different. having been through using the same ones for both functions,with not so good results ,I might add. when you have the correct relays, in the correct positions. it solves a bunch of issues. I fought MAF gremlins for over a year. only to find .that when you have good components. it just works.... who would have thunk it !!

 

The former Wells SU-145 MAF was supposed to be better and more durable than the stock MAF. It had a thick film/computer chip design, similar to the 4thgen MAF. And it was advertised as providing more air flow than the stock MAF. There are several old threads about it here on TGO. I believe Jim85IROC might have/had a Wells MAF, so perhaps he might offer his thoughts if he sees this thread.

The Airtex MAF looks like the Wells MAF and even wears a sticker with part number SU-145.

The Richporter MAF also looks like the Wells MAF. And the Duralast MAF from Autozone looks like the Wells MAF too. Both are listed as new, not reman, and both carry part number XX-157.

The Airtex and Duralast have price tags similar to the Wells MAF, whereas the Richporter MAF is listed at twice the price.

Web searches seem to show that there were patent issues with the Wells product, which might be why it's no longer available as branded. Regardless, as stated in this thread, the Richporter MAF is apparently excellent, so the other lesser-price brands with the same designs are probably also excellent products, probably even the same products.

 

be warned, I have had bad experiences with wells, airtex ect. it wasn't till I bought the "rich-porter" MAF that I got my car to run properly. you DO get what you pay for, and in my experience. the RP one is the only way to go. regardless of price, you have to ask yourself " do I want to actually drive my car?" and if you do . RP is it. nuff said.
