Egr solenoid update
Well I found out that it does not matter how the wires are connected on the solenoid. So I thought I would try something. I know the engine light will cut on from a cold start, so I let the car warm up and then I shut it off. Because I know the next time I crank the car up the light never comes on. I crank the car up and then unplug the EGR solenoid connector and no engine light ever came on. I thought this was rather odd. So once again, I shut the car off. I decided to cut the car on and this time leave the EGR solenoid connector unplugged. A code was never set with the thing unplugged. You would think that the check engine light would come on with the EGR solenoid unplugged. Its like the ECM didn't even see it

I don't think it checks it at start up. I may be wrong. As I know it, it checks it while cruising, the only time the egr is being used anyway. this helps..... http://sethirdgen.org/egr.htm

Re: Egr solenoid update
I have had my EGR temp sensor and solenoid unplugged for 200,000 miles, never set the light. (stock chip)
The ecm only controls (or grounds) certain functions and doesn't receive feedback, this is one of those. However, if there is short the ECM will set the light.

I think the reason you get away with the stock chip is because you unplugged the temp sensor as well. The ECM looks at that sensor for an enable temp, if that temp isn't reached the ECM never calls for EGR. I don't know how the sensor is calibrated so I don't know what resistance corresponds to a given temp. My assumption is that when unplugged the ECM thinks it's too cold. I got away with this when I ran aluminum L98 heads on my 305 with the stock chip and everything still plugged in. With no crossover in the heads, the intake base never got hot enough for the ECM to command EGR flow and no code was ever set.

Re: Egr solenoid update
EGR problem solved. It would seem GM change the software on certain year cars. The temperature switch that was installed, was a normally closed switch. When a normally open switch was installed, the problem went away. Go figure.
