How did you gut your MAF?

I did the research on here before I asked and I am looking for ways to remove the cooling fins. I already removed the screens and am definately removing the fins also. One person wrote to use a hacksaw. I don't see this being feasible, I have an electric rotary tool but the fins are way too long to use it. I have the wire housing duct taped off and am seriously considering a hammer and small chisel to tap/cut the fins out. Any draw backs to this, like the direct banging?? What options do I have?? Thanks!

I used my Sears electric reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade and sawed the fins off in a few minutes. Then used my Mikita high speed grinder to smooth things out.

I could see using a hacksaw.. just assemble the saw with the blade inside the MAF housing, then use a drill or a dremel and a sandpaper wheel or a iron oxide bit to smooth it down. Easy poor mans way.

I took the hacksaw blade out and wrapped duct tape around a section of it for a handle. I then used my dremel to smooth them out.

Won’t the electronics in the MAF overheat without those cooling fins? That’s what they are there for.

Someone here had a theory about those 'cooling' fins in the MAF that I thought was rather funny and probably has a fair amount of truth to it. GM probably took a car to Death Valley and parked the front end right up to a wall with the fans off and overheated the electronics in the MAF, so they added fins.

I havent heard of anyone who cut the fins saying their MAF electronics melted. Im sure there is always a chance though.

Madmax....I've read that in a few places as well...might be fact or fiction, who knows. But I believed it so much, I relieved my MAF of em

It went something like this....

GM was testing in death valley. When they ran the car at WOT, then stopped and shut it off, a couple of the MAFs failed. So, if you go to death valley, run wide open, and then stop for a picnic, you MIGHT be in trouble........

LOL. Can you say "overengineered"??

Before you run off and do it, read the name of the poster of this thread. Now read the name of the poster of this thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=73879

If you do it, be careful. Benefits on an otherwise stock car are probably minimal, but it can be helpful on higher HP stuff. Your choice. My screens are gone and have been for quite some time, and I have done it on more than a few MAF's. Some are not so lucky, dont know why.

If you do a search of MAF screens you will find a whole bunch of posts with pros and cons.

The only 'high flow' MAF is the replacement one Wells sells. There is no aftermarket MAFs for thirdgens, never has been, probably never will be.
