L98 I think my fuel pump is dying help.

Pretty much I was driving home then the car suddenly died on me at a red light no warning just flat-out stalled. I then pushed off the side of the road because it was just cranking and not starting after I waited for about 30 minutes it started up and I was able to drive it for about 10 minutes and then it stalled out and died again it started up for me after 30 minutes and I did was able to drive it home. Once I got it home the next day I came out and started the car and it starts up if you let it sit overnight easily. Once the car is running it runs fine for the first 10 to 15 minutes and then I'll die. The car seems to have perfect spark as it starts every morning without a problem and runs great. Fuel pump fuse is in good shape. I thought it might be the fuel pump relay so I put a new one in and that didn't fix it. I have good fuel pressure and I hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the key to the on position. The fuel pressure stay's high can after I shut it down it takes a long time for it to go down. So I have good fuel pressure it seems. Do you think my fuel pump could be dying slowly? It seems to happen once the engine reaches a certain temperature the car just shuts off and dies and it will not restart. I noticed if I spray starting fluid in there the car will start for half a second and then cut out and die. I'm running remanufactured injectors that are only a year old What do you think the problem could be? I'm living in Kansas City and I really need to get this car back to Chicago before Friday. I'm halfway tempted to buy a fuel pump but I don't want to waste my time dropping the tank if I don't have to. The car has a fairly new ignition system plugs wires cap rotor ignition module ignition coil. Plus the car runs absolutely great when you first started up let me know what you guys think I'm stumped and I'm trying to find some answers

The only way you will know for sure if its the pump is if you hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the rail and monitor it while driving. rent one from the local auto parts store. The valve stem inside the shrader valve on the passenger side fuel rail may need to be removed in order to get fuel to the gauge. Check the type of the gauge and hose prior to leaving the store.

I have a mounted fuel pressure gauge permanently mounted on the fuel rail. It's a Holley fuel pressure gauge. While the car is running I see the fuel pressure is up. even when I shut down the engine pressure still holds in the lines for awhile. someone said that my fuel pump may be getting stuck when the motor warms up that's why it shuts down after 10 mins of running.

You need to see what the fuel pressure is when it dies after 10 min. of running. Do you still have good pressure while cranking, but the engine won't start? Sounds like it could be an ignition problem, possibly the ICM getting hot and shutting down. Could be injector(s) malfunctioning when getting hot, but the chances of all the injectors being bad are very remote. Spraying starting fluid should start the engine if it were a fuel problem so ignition is where I'd be looking. Check that fuel pressure when the engine dies to be sure you have around 40 - 45 psi. HTH!

yes when the car dies and I go around to the engine bay to check the fuel pressure it's at 45 to 50.

Ignition control module. I have had issues with the MSD ones in the past. Car would just die after 10-20 minutes of running it. The module would fail once it got heak soaked.

Its under the distributor cap on your car.

I replaced that 2 years ago with an accell one. I still have my old one. I could install it tonight and let you know If it solves the problem. I figured it would be ok since it's only 2 years old.

Mine died this summer just after I arrived in Denmark (I'm from Sweden). It was only 1-2 years old.

Re: L98 I think my fuel pump is dying help.

Success!! Just got done installing the ignition control module luckily I keep the stock one when I install new parts. Fired right up and has not died in the last hour. Thank you guys so much for chaming in and thanks for suggesting the ignition control module I totally overlooked it due to it being so new of a part. I guess quality control is not what it used to be in some of these performance parts new.

Glad you got it fixed. Did you use thermal paste when you installed the module?
