how bad is the ticking?

use a copper pipe and put up to ear as you search around for potential sources. the tick will reveal itself when you get close

1st thing in the morning I'd take a looooooooong stick, broom handle or something and hold up the starter dust cover, if the sound changes I'd remove the dust cover and see if the sound goes away.

There isn't actually a dust cover currently on the car.

Sounds to me like Bosch III Injectors......

I have them. Mine don't sound like that. They "tick". Maybe a failed smog pump? Unplugged air injection hose into the exhaust manifold?
