New Times with New Engine

Hey all.
I took the car out and ran it the other night.
I guess I'm satisfied for now.
It was on my street tires with no tuning yet and 100 #s of audio crap in the back.
I couldn't launch under any kind of throttle with the street tires and the Yank converter. Just off idle and couldn't even floor it till the top of first.
Two runs as follows:

1st run- got a tps code halfway down the track, very light launch
RT 0.7963
60 ft 2.0866
330 ft 5.6400
1/8 et 8.6273
1/8 mph 82.29
1000 et 11.2001
1/4 et 13.3755
1/4 mph 103.68

2cd run- no codes but knock too much knock retard, launched a little harder but spun thru 1st and beginning of 2cd.
RT 0.7726
60 ft 2.0930
330 ft 5.5948
1/8 et 8.5550
1/8 mph 82.94
1000 et 11.1030
1/4 et 13.2528
1/4 mph 105.01

I know I'm loosing mph through the knock retard. I get alot of false knock with an exhaust leak near the sensor and through the valvetrain.
Can you tell me what the torque specs is supposed to be for the knock sensor? I think i have it in way too tight!

I'm happy that at least I know it will go 12s easy with some traction and more tuning.
BTW: There was a Henessy Venom out there, the twin turbo viper.
He was running mid 10s at 145 on slicks. Not bad for a street car. later

Not bad for the first time at the track with the new setup. How bad were you spinning the tires? Do you have stock rear suspension? What is your timing set at? What tranny do you have? Nice work. Good luck on your quest for 12 seconds. You should be deep into the twelves if you get it running right.

spinning pretty bad thru first when i try to get on it, and a little into second. I am gonna try my drag radials next time.
The suspension is stock with Lakewood LCAs.
The tranny is a bone stock 700r4 running the Yank 3200. Shifts pretty good with a little slippage.
I have the timing set too high at 8* initial, when it should be stock @ 6* with my chip. That could be where some knock is coming from.

For my next trip out I will have the timing bumped back to 6*, running drag radials, take out 100 #s of crap, and my knock sensor torqued to spec.
I think it'll go at least 12.8@107, but we'll see.

Anyone know the what the knock sensor is supposed to be torqued to?

According to my 91 service manual it is 14lbs. I assume it is the same for yours.

Best of luck on your quest for 12s. I hope to see you there this summer.
What kind of false knock are you picking up through the valvetrain?
I have a similar problem. I am getting as much as 10 degrees taken out after say 5000rpm. I tried octane boost, cranking the fuel pressure to 60lbs+(19LB inj), retarding base timing, new knock sensor, and now a esc module for a 350 ( I went from a 305 to a ZZ4 and didn't change it until now but haven't run yet).
Also how do you like the hot cam? I have one but am still running the ZZ4 w/1.6s, miniram and AFRs.
Last I ran in Sep. 13.2@107 with 3.08s out back and no traction.

Not bad, as for your knock sensor, I read somewhere that you can switch to one from an lt4 and not have as much problem, because they aren't as sensitive do to a noisier valve train or some such. Or just fix that exhause leak Sounds like you need some work on those 60' times too. Good luck.

thanx guys.
I am going to check the TQ on the knock sensor and look into the LT4 sensor.
Wiesman- Some valvetrains are just noisier i guess. I can tell that my last two modified 350s were way noisier than my stock 305.
I think it is cause with aftermarket cams/rocker arms, the valve is being lifted so much higher and longer that when it comes down, it comes down faster and with more force from the valve springs. Really slapping that valve seat. I have all my lash set correctly and it just seems to be a loud valvetrain. It runs great and smooth though.
My SuperRam aslo seems to echo my valvetrain alot, it is a much louder intake than my stock tpi. How is your Miniram?
Last time i had the scanner on it, it was pulling out as much as 18*-20* in the higher rpms. This was just revving it in park, I don't know how much is being pulled out under full throttle load, because the computer wouldn't let me get into the datastream when i made my run.
That could account for alot of hp in both our cases.
I too am running a stock 305 esc module. Are they different? Should i switch mine out for a 350 module? 107 is good mph, i hope to hit that next time out. Let me know how it helps you.

Oh yeah, Wiesman-
I like the Hot Cam alot.
It started right up and idles great. Surges a little every now and then, but not very bad. This is due to a few small vacuum leaks.
I ran it up to 6500 the other day on accident shifting out of first and it just kept pulling, this is pretty good for a SuperRam, your intake will love to go 6500+. Great off idle power and it makes really good high rpm power. So i am quite pleased with it.
You will love it with that Miniram. And it works great with our heads. I bet you could get 20+ hp easy just swapping to the Hot cam. That would put you at 109+mph through the traps!
What headers are you running?

The drivetrain in my new 350 w/rollers is louder than my stock 305. As far as echoing the valvetrain noise through the intake are you sure what your hearing isn't turbulence in the dual air filter snorkle? I can hear that big-time.

The esc modules have different part #s. I went ahead and ordered one from GM. It cost like $35. I don't have the number handy.

I'll have to move the hot cam from my bench to my motor soon. I will wait until I get this knock retard habit kicked though. Do you know of a 2-piece timing chain cover for late model blocks?

I have SLP 1 5/8 headers. I like them alot. They looked fantastic at first but they did turn kind of brown/gray color. I was dissappointed at first, I thought stainless meant silver/gray forever. At least they won't rust.

No, its just the sound of the valves closing reverbing through the intake. Its pretty cool.
Check summit, they have some two piece timing covers. It shouldn't matter if its late or an early unless your using a cam button, cause the cover needs to push against it. With a thrust plate, which is stock, it wont matter.
