350 l98 to ZZ4 swap??
350 l98 to ZZ4 swap??
How can this be done, can the stock tpi system be fitted to the ZZ4 engine? If so, what needs to be done? Will the TPI meet the needs of the new engine, will larger runners and a 52 mm tb help? Or would the holley pro-jection setup be better?

The advertised horsepower is tested with the carb setup. There are many people on this board who run ZZ4's with tpi setups so it does work, but I would guess your numbers (hp vs torque) would yield better results (e.t /mph) with a carb setup. Tpi makes so much low end torque its hard to hook and not as much hp up top. I'm no expert so go to the tpi board. I've seen many guys hang out there with that same setup (ZZ4 tpi).

Yes you could use the stock system, but it will limit the motor's potential. I'm using an Accel hi flow LTR setup and I'm about to bite the bullet and get the SuperRam. It all depends on your goal for the car. My setup has the potential to easily be in the 12's so I'm willing to invest in helping it breathe a little more to get there. I'm in the middle of tuning the LTR setup through prom burning and turned 108.5 mph last night, according to the G-tech. That's probably about 104-105 at the track, so this setup is getting better. Bottom line, if your like me you will always want more, so get the best that you can afford to put on it now.
Go for it. I have avery simular setup to Steve10 but with gutted SLP runners and it is a fun car to drive. The only thing I would change is I would have gotten a GMPP HOT cam. Then I don't think I would have felt like I needed the nitrous.
So the stock tpi with a 52mm TB, siamese runners and headers still wouldnt be good? I really like the look of the TPI system, but apparently it wouldnt measure up huh guys? I wanna get the most outta this engine, but dont wanna go with a carb.

No, it will be very streetable. The ZZ4 tpi is probably the easiest route to a very streetable fast ride. A lack of traction has nothing to do with street manners. There are many people who have used the entire stock tpi system including the stock throttle body. What we're saying is, if you can afford it, get the aftermarket intake pieces. Also order the motor with the HOT cam and 1.6RR options. These are things that most people end up with in the end. If you can't afford the extras, use your existing stuff with a little porting. You will still have a dependable, streetable high 13's car. Also, I have to recommend getting into DIY prom burning. This should be one of your mandatory mods. There's nothing that you will do to your car that is more rewarding. Take it from me, invest in the equipment and in 2 weeks you will be able to program an equivalent (Hypertech, JET, etc.) aftermarket chip in 5 min. Good Luck!
Dont waste your money on the accel "street ram". If you go with anything it should be superram or miniram (if you want efi). Personaly I would go with miniram or a modified LT1 intake, because I think it would give me the best results. Any way you go, if you use an efi system it will be very streetable. If you use a modified tpi system, you will probably have problems with traction when racing. The ZZ4 with the stock cam makes 400 ft/lbs with their carb setup, with tpi this number will be higher. Any way you look at it the worst you should have is a mid/high 13 second car. Any other mods (miniram/hotcam/etc) will make the car faster.
Good luck with the swap

Cool, thanks alot guys. My car has been outta comission for almost 6 months, I wanna prep. everything before the engine goes in. Ill see what the cost of miniram vs tpi is and work things out.
I would agree with most of the responses. My ZZ4 is just a great street motor, reliable, super torquey. No dyno results or track times yet but the car has truly come alive. (It began life with the TPI 305). I am currently redoing the rear suspension with some awesome Spohn components and adding some subframe connectors. I would agree that at soon as you get the thing running you'll be thinking about 1.6 rockers and "what if" about the higher rpm intakes. I have to deal with the smog fiasco in Ca. so I'm limited as to what I can do. But if I had my way ---

About emissions, I have to deal with them too in NJ, I was under the impression that the ZZ4 WASNT emissions legal even if you ran all your stock smog stuff including cats, is this true?? With that kind of power shouldnt you see 12s readily if you get good 60fts seeing as how my L98 is pushing mid 13s as is and is nearing low 13s w/ stock internals??
The beauty of the short block world is that they all look the same. The reason (I believe) that the motor is only legal for pre 76 is that the heads/manifold on the ZZ4 do not have the EGR passages. The ported manifolds available have an external EGR port that you directly connect to the passenger side exhaust headers. I have seen numbers for the ZZ4 on this web site that are well below the specs.. Also, GM offers a kit that is smog legal that uses the ZZ4 with no EGR for carbed setups (87 and earlier F bodies) running a 305. If they can pass emissions with a carb - we should be able to pass with TPI.
I must admit I will find out this Sept. when I have to have it smogged. I don't plan on telling anyone that it's not a 305 and I'm going to be careful about who I take it to.

Is it just me or does it make alot of sense to use a ZZ4 cam in your L98 as long as it's healthy?
As far as I know with that setup, the only difference between the ZZ4 and an L98 w/ZZ4 cam is iron vs aluminum heads. They should besame castings, tho. Well that, and the forged internals, but that doesn affect power.
I plan to go with a ZZ4 cam, mildly ported L98 heads, and a mildly ported TPI setup, and i'll pray for 13's
