Cams, one hard pick

Hi everyone

I'm at the point where I'm thinking about putting a new cam in my '91 305 TPI Trans Am. It's a 5 spd. I'm pretty good with engines, but when it comes to cams, i'm confused, so I'll ask the pros here.

I got SLP headers, a hypertech chip, 160 thermo, 3" exhaust, TPI airfoil, SLP Cold Air, SLP runners.

What i've been told by compcams is that to get their XR264HR
the specs on that is: Dur @ 0.050 is 212, 218 valve lift w/ 1.5 rocker arms .488 .495. Lobe separation is 112 degrees.

Now from what i know and what their catalog says that this is the best cam for 305 + 350 TPI motors, with NO mods.

My exhaust sounds pretty good, but with the stock cam it doesn't sound like a muscle car, it idles like a my buddies V6 Camaro. So I was wondering how can i make it have a nice lopey, aggressive idle? Would that cam do it? Should I go with something else considering my mods? Why wouldn't they recommend getting the cam for a 305 WITH mods? what other mods ould be next?

Please help me out here ????

The problem with getting the idle sound you are looking for is that your motor will probably not pull enough vaccum for your computer to work properly. In general the higher the LSA the smoother the idle. The cam comp gave you will definetly be a large improvement over stock and shouldnt give you any computer problems.

TPI, don't look for much of an 'Idle' with any type of cam in a TPI. You're not going to get a 'Lopey" idle, unfortunately. Check the cam in my sig. my idle is very close to as smooth as it was with the peanut cam, and with an LSA of 110 deg. I did lose a bit of low end, but it does pull much better from 3000 on- better after I do exhaust, etc, check with everyone else here about the idle, though, and I think most will agree.

Wait a few days, I'll have my crane 2032 cam(214/220) in an 89 5 speed 305 soon, (just need to change 4 more valve springs and put the TPI back on.) That cam sounds like a good cam for your car.

The "no mods" was probably meant for the 350 engine or refering to a car with stock heads and induction. Stock TPI and big cams don't mix.

Swapping a cam and valve springs in the car is a much bigger deal than I thought it was going to be. Alot of work, much harder than say replacing a clutch in my opinion.

Can the computer be reprogrammed to work with diff. cams and vacuum conditions?

do you have the specs for that extreme energy cam?
