Distributor gear desintegration after 1k miles
Distributor gear desintegration after 1k miles
Recently rebuild a l98tpi engine all stock appart from a high volume oil pump (m55hv) for good measure and some small improvements such as low temp thermostat and south bay fuel injectors.
My (stock) distributor gear desintegrated once, got it towed and changed. Attributed this to the fact it was an old used one grinding against a new slim increase in hp. Then it happened again. Something is obviously severely out of spec. I have instructed the garage that's doing the second repair under warranty to check distributor shaft clearance to see if it's binding up the oil pump. They are also ordering the gear from a reputable seller with the correct spec for the stock camshaft.
Apart from the obvious (the fact I'm using a stronger, albeit standard pressure, oil pump), is there anything I am missing?

The intermediate shaft must have clearance - things grow bigger when they heat up.
You might need a shim under the distributor so that you are not binding the oil pump, depending upon how much milling was done to the block, heads, or intake.
What type of camshaft? You must use a different type of gear material in certain situations.

Ditch the high volume oil pump asap (to much load on dist gear) and use a melonized dist gear. (check shaft clearance too)
