Spark plug recommendation with headers and Crane HI6

Hey Everyone, looks like I need new plugs. What is recommended now days for a 5.7 tpi with edelbrock headers, crane hi6 ignition. I have accel shorty plugs now, but those are from the late 90s. I tried searching but couldn't find anything specific to the headers and ignition.

I like NGK in everything for an 89 350 either NGK 2869 Std copper plugs or NGK 7401 Iridium IX plugs. I have had good luck with both. Running iridium now seems happy

Re: Spark plug recommendation with headers and Crane HI6

Pretty sure I need short plugs because of the headers. The ones I have in there now are accel 0576s. Accel 8199 is the one that shows for the male and model. Specs are the same as the 0576s. Can't seem to find a difference between them. The ones I have are only 2 5/8" overall length.

NGK has plugs that are equivalent - UR4, UR5 or UR6. The 4 is hot and the 6 is cold.

Cool thanks,
Anyone have any idea the heat range I'd need with intake, headers, exhaust and crane fireball hi 6?
The heat range for the accel 8199 is 6. Not sure if NGK compares. I'm guessing I'd need UR6.

Not sure what heads and compression you have but sounds like you're mostly stock. A stock delco plug works fine.

Re: Spark plug recommendation with headers and Crane HI6

I found NGKs cross reference chart. The UR5 is comparable to 0576s. Will that work or should I go hotter?

I need a short plug to clear the headers. Why I'm looking at the NGK UR5 or UR6. They are a lot less money than the accel shorty plugs. I have stock internals and heads. So I should go with whatever plug is comparable to stock heat range? As far as gap, I'm seeing people recommend 40-50 with a good ignition and coil.

NGK says UR4 is factory heat range on 89 TA 5.7. I would start around .040 Max .045 you could probably use the recommended .035

I remember using stock plugs on a 87 formula 350 with edlebrock headers back in the day.. May have clearanced a tube but no big deal.

That's good advice. I have this old Craftsman pass thru socket set.

I actually use my dewalt cordless ratchet for most of them with swivel extensions.
Just did the plugs on my other V8 last night. Reached all of them with the cordless ratchet. Fastest plug change I've ever done. So much easier when you don't have to swing the handle to loosen/tighten.
