TPI swap info needed

Hi,

I'm swapping in TPI to my 84 L69 305 soon, gotta few questions, please. TPI is from an '85 305 IROC-Z. I've got 99% of what I need off the donor car.

1. Do I have to change over the alternator, AC compressor, PS pump & AIR pump?

2. I've got a set of Hooker Shortie headers W/O AIR tubes. Can I run these and eliminate the AIR pump completely? Will that throw "codes"?

3. The engine is bone stock, would porting/siamesing the TPI be really worth the effort?

I'm sure they'll be more questions down the road

TIA

Ed

1) no, chances are that all the accessories will swap over, as long as you have the same belt system. if i'm not mistaken, the 84 had multiple belts. if you put the accesories from a later model on the 84, i dont think it'll work because they used a serpentine belt ( someone correct me if i'm wrong)

2)yes you can run no smog, no there wont be any codes. just check local emissions laws. your car may be old enough to not have to pass the sniffer

3) yes. the f bodies need all the help. every little bit counts. they;ll do ya more good later on down the road when you have more mods

Serpentine belts did not start until 88. You should be able to reuse your current accessories and bracketry.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. This whole site is like the Fort Knox of 3rd gen info.

The '84 L69 uses a couple of Vbelts, but the '85 TPI 305 had a Vbelt and a serpentine belt. My current accessories all work great, and I'd like to keep them if possible. I just wasn't sure if there'd be clearence problems with the dual snorkle (or something like that) by keeping the original Vbelt set-up. I guess it'll be trial & error.

I'm happy to hear I can ditch the AIR pump. The factory pollution hoses under this hood are a plumber's nightmare.

Just thought of another question, tho...

Will I need a new throttle & 700R4 tranny kickdown cable?

Thanks,

Ed

I was planning on gutting the airbox & rigging-up a cold air / ram air set up.

Anyone else, please?

Will I need a new throttle cable? Or a (700R4) tranny kickdown cable?

Thanks,

Ed

Yes, the cables will be too short to reach the TPIs throttle body (way at the front of the engine compared to the carb's engine at the middle).
