Accident on the strip
Accident on the strip
Man saturday night me and 2 of my friends who drive stangs went to the local track. Well i wanted to drive my buddys 93 gt just to see what it had. Well at about 80 something locked up in the rear. Car cut hard right into the wall and rolled onto the drivers side door. I got lucky and just got bruised a little and i have 2 stiches over my eye. But now were worried about the car. What could have happend. I'm not very good when it comes to rear ends and trannys so i'm confused.
Does anyone have an idea what would make it lock up and jerk to the right like that.

Unbolt the driveshaft and see if the rear wheels will spin. If they do, it's gotta be something with either the transmission or the engine itself. If they don't spin, then take a look at the rear end.
A spider gear explosion would do that. I had that happen to me in a 4X4 truck once. Luckily the axles snapped so I was able to roll on all 4 tires to a stop on the side of the road.

Thats probably what happend. I know the spider gears on "non posi" fNord rear ends are crap and if the roll pin or clips break or come loose the rear end will lock. It happend to my Mom in her old bronco. Funny though 99% of the time with a GM rear breaking the same way you wont lockup just roll.

well the drive shaft is out and the tires don't spin. I geuss a new rear end is on the list of things to replace. THe universals are almost broke and the weld on the the end of the drive shaft is craked. Do u guys think it damaged the tranny.

Same thing happened to my friends 74 Vette. Only difference is, it happens to his when he is stopped. The rear end would lock up and not allow the car to move at all, even if it was in neutral. They opened the rear and it was fine... changed the u joints and just about everything else under there. They have no idea what it was... it hasnt done it in a long time though.
Who knows, it could be the same thing as my friends Vette, but as I said, we have no idea what the problem actually was. Mystery to everyone that has heard the story.... thank *** it didnt happen to him while he was driving.... and your lucky that you are ok.

Are you sure one of the brake pistons on the Vette didn't jam up in the cylinder.
I only say this cause I know Vette guys, and they don't put a whole lot of miles on there cars. They sit a lottttt. Those little flying gremlins start to bread over the winter - you know.
I think I put a whole 5000 miles on mine last year.

ronterry... that is quite possible. It has not happened in over a year, but I will mention that to him as a possibility. That actually happens to my fathers Cobra.
The pin or bolt that holds spiders in place could have broken letting the spider shaft to fall out, locking the rear end up. Same thing happened to my brothers CHEVELLE, he didn't flip or anything but the guy at the local chev dealer parts counter said that the little bolt has killed alot of people. Now hows the friend holding up to having his car flipped?

Come on guys were trying to figure it out. With the reear end off the ground the back tires won't spin. Is there any way i can figure out what exactly is locked up.

Come on, take stuff apart, sooner or later you'll see a problem. I'm guessing it's not going to be a grain of sand stuck between the ring and pinion gears. If it locked up that bad it should be quite obvious when you take it apart and find the problem.
