TCI Pro Super Rebuild kit (700r4) in Jegs any good??? If not which kit is decent?

Hey, I've got a dying 700r4 and I have no money to shell out for a $1400 pro-built like I would love to do. So I was thinking of trying to tackle a rebuild on it myself. So I've started looking around at some kits, and plan to buy a manual/instruction book to dig deeper into whether or not I think I can handle it before I buy any kits, but I was wondering if any of the kits Jegs or Summit sell are any good. (I've pulled/built the engine, done in car cam swaps etc so from what I've been told with a good manual I can probably handle the tranny rebuild...)

I'm specifically looking at the TCI kit that Jegs sells for like $210. Does this have some better than stock stuff? Here's the link: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...759&prmenbr=76

Summit has a Hughes rebuild that looks better, but it's like $329. No info on Summit's webpage other than "Premium Race Kit, 1982-93 4L60, Kolene, red alto, kevlar band" If you have the catalog it has a little more about it. Obviously got some good stuff with those particular steels/frictions. Is it worth the extra money over the TCI kit? The TCI kit ad isn't specific on exactly what it has in the way of the parts...

Are either of these worth a crap? I can maybe swing getting the Hughes kit which appears to be alot better, but who knows what extra costs I'll run into or tools I'll need to buy/rent to do it. My college semester just ended for the summer so I have plenty of time to spend doing the rebuild. Think I'm stuck doing it that way...

Also, I wanted to ask what else is not in these kits in the way of hard parts that would need to be replaced if any. The tranny won't shift out of 2nd at WOT, which I believe is the 3-4 bands. It also neutrals if you floor it in 4th, instead of downshifting. I've been told this is the "input sprag". That's not in the kits I assume, any idea on cost of that item, other associated items that are likely bad as well???

Thanks for any info, I've go to do something and I can't afford a whole new tranny or even a "pro" stock rebuild... The kits Pro-Built sells are probably the best just like their trannies, but $530 bucks is out of my range unless absolutely unavoidable... I see it does come with alot of "hard parts" though...

Oh yeah, I have all the standard tools, but nothing tranny related. I will rent a tranny jack to facilatate pulling/installing the tranny as I did when I swapped in a better TC, but what else in the way of tools will I need? Can I borrow/rent these from somewhere?

I really couldn't tell you if the kit is good or bad, but one thing I know is that TCI and B&M don't make frictions. So what are they? What brand? Taiwan, China?....

The only two brands i'd say to go with are Borg Warner Hi-Energy or Alto red-eagle. I don't know of a good place to price the BW's online, but http://www.hptransparts.com has a good selection of the Alto's and are nicely priced..... You need to order the 'other' parts you need (like gasket and rubber kit, bushings, sprags, thrust washers..... ect...) seperate, but they are grouped under the trans type which makes it easy.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, very helpful they seem to have pretty good prices on all the miscellaneous stuff. Thanks.

I used a Pro Super Kit in my old TH350 and had no problems with it. Buy a manual for the transmission because no kits come with instructions.

If you want the "top of the line" rebuild kit go to my web-site www.pro-built.net Everything that is needed is there! The price might sound high, but look at what you get compared to the other rebuild kits. Let me know if I can be of help?

I'm interested in one of your rebuild kits Pro Built. Sounds like what I need, but do I need any special tools other than perhaps a tranny jack?

Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Dana. I'll be calling you sometime today. Most likely I'll probably order a complete tranny from you. I just have a few questions about the total cost, torque converters and how long it will take to get it to me.
